Plumbers Tape

Plumbers tape, often called PTFE tape, Teflon tape, or thread seal tape, is the go-to way to create leak-free, lubricated connections on tapered pipe threads. It fills microscopic gaps, reduces friction so fittings seat properly, and helps prevent galling on stainless steel. Whether you’re installing a shower arm, replacing a hose bibb, or building out NPT manifolds, the right tape improves seal reliability and makes future disassembly easier.

Key types and color codes:
- White PTFE: general plumbing, water lines.
- Pink high-density PTFE: potable water, higher pressure.
- Yellow gas-rated PTFE: natural gas and LP.
- Green oxygen-safe PTFE: oxygen service (where approved).
- Gray (nickel-filled): stainless steel threads to reduce seizing.

Choose width to match the fitting: 1/2 inch for 1/2–3/4 inch fittings, 3/4 inch or 1 inch for larger diameters. Higher density tapes resist tearing and are easier to apply neatly.

Application tips for a dependable seal:
- Clean and dry male threads.
- Wrap clockwise (the same direction the fitting tightens).
- Start one thread back from the end to avoid shedding tape into the system.
- Stretch slightly and overlap 50%; use 3–6 wraps based on tape density and thread quality.
- For stubborn joints, pair PTFE tape with a compatible pipe joint compound.

Works on metal and plastic threaded fittings including brass, copper, steel, PVC, and CPVC adapters. Do not use on flare, compression, or push-to-connect fittings, and never on non-threaded joints.
