Milwaukee Carbide Grit Hole Saw Review

4.3 out of 5

The Milwaukee Carbide Grit Hole Saw is my go-to choice for tackling abrasive materials like brick, cement board, and tile. It's a versatile and powerful tool designed to handle some of the toughest materials you'll encounter on the job. Having used it extensively, I can confidently share my experiences and insights on its performance, craftsmanship, and overall utility.

Right out of the package, the first thing that caught my attention was the tungsten carbide grit edge. This feature is specifically engineered for cutting abrasive materials, and it does not disappoint. The coarse grit and segmented edge make for incredibly fast cutting, which is a big plus when you’re on a tight schedule. I used it to cut through dense laboratory tabletop material, which was a hard surface embedded with sand. Despite the challenging material, the hole saw sliced through like a hot knife through butter.

One aspect that makes this hole saw stand out is its design for easy plug access. The wide, angled, and offset slots are a thoughtful addition, making it easy to remove the plug after cutting. This is a small but crucial feature that can save a lot of time and frustration, especially when you’re working on multiple holes in quick succession.

The included carbide-tipped pilot bit is also a valuable addition. It’s specifically recommended for materials like ceramic tile and brick, and it performs exceptionally well. In one of my projects, I was drilling through a brick wall, and the bit made the process surprisingly smooth. The pilot bit guided the hole saw accurately, reducing the chances of wandering and ensuring a clean, precise cut.

One of the most impressive aspects of this tool is its compatibility with various arbors. This makes it a versatile addition to any toolbox, as it can be used with different drills without any hassle. I used it with a small cordless drill on low speed, and the results were more than satisfactory. The recommended RPM of 750 is a good benchmark, but I found that even slightly lower speeds worked well, especially when cutting through particularly tough materials.

Durability is always a concern with tools designed for heavy-duty use, and the Milwaukee Carbide Grit Hole Saw holds up well in this regard. After multiple uses, including cutting through cement block and hard stucco backed by heavy wire mesh, the tool showed minimal signs of wear. It maintained its edge and continued to deliver clean, smooth cuts. This longevity is a testament to the quality of materials and craftsmanship that Milwaukee is known for.

However, no tool is without its flaws. On one occasion, I encountered an issue where the bit became dull after drilling just a quarter inch into a particularly hard surface. This was a rare occurrence and could be attributed to the specific material being exceptionally abrasive. Still, it’s worth noting that while the tool generally performs well, it may occasionally struggle with exceptionally tough materials.

Another minor drawback is that the tool comes in clamshell packaging, which can be a bit cumbersome to open. While this doesn’t impact the tool’s performance, it’s a small inconvenience that could be improved.

Overall, the Milwaukee Carbide Grit Hole Saw is a robust, efficient, and versatile tool that is well worth the investment. Its fast cutting capabilities, ease of plug access, and compatibility with various arbors make it a valuable addition to any professional or DIYer’s toolkit. The included carbide-tipped pilot bit enhances its utility, providing precise and clean cuts in a variety of abrasive materials.

Would I recommend this tool? Absolutely. Its performance and durability make it a reliable choice for anyone who frequently works with abrasive materials. While it may occasionally encounter issues with exceptionally tough surfaces, these instances are rare and do not significantly detract from its overall utility. Whether you’re an electrician needing to cut through cement blocks or a DIY enthusiast working on a home improvement project, the Milwaukee Carbide Grit Hole Saw is a tool that will serve you well.
