Lee Women's Ultra Lux Comfort with Flex Motion Trouser Pant Black 18 Medium Review

4.2 out of 5

A week in the Lee Ultra Lux trousers

I wore these trousers through a full week of commute-to-office days, mixing desk time with meetings, stairs, and a lot of bending and walking. Mine are the black pair in size 18 with the 32-inch (medium) inseam. By the end of the week, I had a good sense of where these pants shine and where they come up short.

Fabric and construction

The fabric sits in a sweet spot: substantial enough to drape cleanly and feel professional, but not so heavy that it reads winter-only. There’s noticeable stretch throughout, which gives these a forgiving, move-with-you character. Seams are even, the stitching is tidy, and the zipper/button closure feels secure. I didn’t see puckering at stress points or any seam bite at the thighs, which is often where trousers at this price point falter.

The hand-feel leans smooth with a bit of structure—more polished than knit ponte, less rigid than classic suiting. The black color reads deep and uniform out of the bag. After a few cold washes and line dry, I didn’t see obvious fading or shine on the knees. If you’re color-sensitive, care will matter (cold water, inside-out) to keep the black true.

Wrinkle resistance is solid. Creases relaxed quickly on a hanger, and by the time I put them on in the morning, they looked office-ready without steaming.

Fit and comfort

These are a regular-fit, mid-rise trouser with a straight, trouser-leg silhouette and a 20-inch leg opening. On me (curvier through the hips and thighs), the size 18 is true to size in the waist and hip, with a relaxed thigh that doesn’t cling. The non-binding waistband is the quiet star: it has enough give to accommodate sitting, standing, and reaching without digging or rolling, yet it still holds the pants in place. I could sit through long meetings comfortably and kneel to plug in cables without feeling pinched.

The mid-rise reads like a real mid-rise—neither a high waist nor a low slung cut—and sits a bit below the navel. Coverage is good when seated, with minimal back gap. If you’re accustomed to higher rises, you might notice the difference; if you prefer a classic mid-rise, this hits the mark.

Inseam and length options

With the 32-inch inseam, the hem skims the top of my loafers and looks clean with low heels. These are offered in 30, 32, and 34 inches. If you’re tall or prefer more break with heels, go for the 34. If you’re under 5'5" or wear flats exclusively, the 30 may still require a small hem depending on your proportions and where you like the pant to hit.

One note: the front rise measurement in this cut is on the moderate side. If you pull the waistband too high to chase length you may create tension at the front. Select your inseam with your shoe choice in mind rather than compensating with where the pants sit on your waist.

Pockets and details

Front slant pockets and back welt pockets keep the profile sleek. The front pockets are usable for a key or badge but are on the shallow side; a phone will print. The back welts are clean and don’t flare. The zipper fly and button closure are conventional and unobtrusive.

There’s no flashy hardware or contrast stitching, which helps these blend in with a broad range of office wardrobes—from polished knit tees to blazers and cardigans.

Performance through the day

  • Mobility: The stretch is real and consistent across the garment. Crouching to pick up a box or stepping up onto a high curb never felt restrictive. The waistband in particular flexes with movement without losing shape over the day.
  • Breathability: Indoors they’re comfortable. Outdoors in warm, direct sun, they can run a bit warm; the fabric’s density, while great for drape, holds some heat. For air-conditioned offices, they’re ideal.
  • Shape retention: No bagging at the seat by day’s end, and knees didn’t develop pronounced bulges. After washing, they returned to true shape without drama.
  • Static and cling: Minimal during my testing, even on dry days. A quick pass with a fabric brush in the morning was enough.

Sizing notes and consistency

The size 18 in black fits like a true regular 18 for me—snug enough in the waist to stay put, with room in the thigh and a clean line through the calf. That said, I’ve found that different colorways in this line can feel slightly different in stretch and ease. The black fabric has a moderate stretch—supportive rather than ultra-stretchy. If you’re between sizes or prefer a looser drape, consider ordering two sizes to compare, especially if you’re exploring other colors.

Body type considerations:
- Curvy through hip/thigh: The cut accommodates curves without sausage-casing the thigh. The waistband’s give helps avoid waist squeeze.
- Straighter builds: The regular fit leaves a little breathing room in the leg; if you prefer a slim trouser, you may find the leg more relaxed than expected.
- Fuller midsection: The mid-rise and structured waistband are comfortable, but you may appreciate sizing up for a more forgiving front.

Style pairing

The clean front and trouser leg make these easy to dress for business casual:
- With loafers and a fine-gauge sweater for a low-key office day.
- With block heels and a blazer for client-facing meetings.
- With a tucked blouse; the waistband sits flat enough to keep bulk down.

Because the hem isn’t flared, they also work with sleek sneakers for a commute or a casual Friday. The black colorway plays well with navy, charcoal, camel, and textured knits. If you’re hemming, aim for just above the back of your heel for a classic break.

Care and durability

I washed on cold, inside-out, and line-dried. That routine maintained color and avoided any shrink. If you’re tempted to tumble dry, do it low and brief, then hang to finish. The fabric has held up well against friction from a desk chair and crossbody bag. I didn’t notice pilling or premature wear along the inner thighs after a handful of wears and washes.

What could be better

  • Pocket depth: The front pockets are too shallow for modern phones and barely adequate even for a small card case. If you rely on pockets, you’ll be disappointed.
  • Heat buildup outdoors: The density that makes them drape nicely can feel warm in hot, humid conditions. For summer outdoor work, they’re not ideal.
  • Potential variability across colors: If you plan to buy multiple colors, expect slight differences in stretch and ease. Ordering two sizes for comparison is a smart play.
  • Limited rise options: The mid-rise is well executed, but users who want a higher rise for additional front coverage won’t find that option in this cut.

The bottom line

The Lee Ultra Lux trousers are a dependable, comfortable pair of work pants with a genuinely forgiving waistband, a clean professional silhouette, and fabric that balances structure with stretch. They move well, resist wrinkles, and hold their shape over a full day. The black pair I tested fits true to size with a relaxed, office-appropriate leg and enough give for active days.

They’re not perfect—pockets are more decorative than functional, and the fabric can feel warm outdoors—but for everyday office wear, teaching, or any job that straddles sitting and movement, they hit a very practical sweet spot. Choose your inseam thoughtfully, care for them with cold water and hang-dry, and consider trying two sizes if you’re between fits or exploring other colors.

Recommendation: I recommend these trousers for anyone seeking a comfortable, mid-rise, regular-fit work pant that looks polished without feeling restrictive. Their combination of stretch, drape, and a non-binding waistband makes them an easy daily driver for business casual wardrobes, especially if you prioritize comfort and clean lines over deep pockets or ultra-light fabrics.

Creative

Hidden-zip travel pouch

Use the existing waistband, pockets and zipper fly to create a travel pouch that sits flat against the body. Cut the legs off, fold and sew the inseam closed to make a slim pouch; retain and reinforce the front slant pockets as external compartments. Add a small strap from leftover fabric so it can be worn crossbody or tucked into a bag.

Pocket-panel tote bag

Turn the pant legs into a sturdy everyday tote. Use one leg as the bag body, the waistband as a reinforced top edge, and keep the welt back pockets on the exterior for phone/keys. Line with cotton and add handles from the other leg; the non-binding waistband gives a neat finished rim.

Apron with integrated tool pockets

Transform the front and back panels into a full-coverage apron. Reuse the slant pockets as angled tool or utensil holders and the waistband as an adjustable neck/waist strap. Ideal for gardeners, chefs, or makers who want a durable, work-ready apron with comfortable fit.

Patchwork cushion or lumbar pillow

Cut panels from the pants (front rise, pocket faces, leg panels) and sew into a textured patchwork cushion cover. Use the waistband or zipper fly as a unique closure element. The durable fabric and pocket details make a tactile decorative pillow for home or office.

Convertible skirt/shorts

Rework the trousers into a wrap skirt or tailored shorts that keep the original waistband and fly. For a skirt, open the inseams and reshape the hem; for shorts, shorten and add decorative pocket trims. Use flexible fabric to preserve comfort and motion.
