KUMGROT 6 PCS Straight Pipe Lamp Stem Kit with Connector Light Fixture Parts Lamp Making Kit Black Finish Lamp Rod Kit down Rods for Pendant Lights, 7.87" (200mm) Long Review
What it is and why I reached for it
I picked up the KUMGROT stem kit to sort out a couple of lighting odds and ends: evening out the drop on a pair of kitchen pendants, shortening a chandelier over a dining table, and keeping a few spare stems on hand for future projects. The kit includes six straight stems (each 200 mm/7.87 inches long) and six 20 mm couplings. The rods are heavy iron with a black, eggshell-like finish, and they’re hollow with an internal diameter of about 0.28 inches for running wire. Both ends are threaded for M10 hardware, and the couplings are there for connecting rods to rods or rods to fixtures.
If you work on lights regularly—or you’re in the middle of a remodel where fixtures never seem to hang at the right height—having multiple identical stems in one finish is surprisingly handy.
Build and finish quality
The overall construction is solid. Each rod feels weighty and straight, with no detectable bend or wobble when rolled on a flat surface. The black coating is even, closer to an eggshell than a gloss, which helps it blend with most black fixtures without drawing attention. I didn’t find bubbling or clumps in the finish on the exterior, and the interior bore was free of burrs, which matters when you’re pulling wire.
One detail I appreciated: the finish isn’t so thick at the edges that it compromises threading, which can happen with budget stem kits. I did see a light dusting of finish on a couple of thread starts, but nothing a soft-bristle brush couldn’t clear.
Threads and compatibility
A key point: the kit uses M10 threading. In lamp hardware, that typically means M10 x 1.0 pitch. In the U.S., many fixtures are built around 1/8-IP thread (which is 3/8-inch OD with 27 TPI), and it’s not the same as M10. If your fixture or canopy fittings are 1/8-IP, you’ll either need an adapter (M10 to 1/8-IP) or to stick with hardware that matches this kit.
On my pendants (European-sourced), the M10 threads matched perfectly. On a U.S.-market ceiling canopy I wanted to reuse, I had to add an inexpensive M10-to-1/8-IP coupling to make it work. Once I did, it tightened down cleanly and sat flush.
The threads themselves are snug. That’s mostly a good thing for keeping everything aligned, but it does demand care to avoid cross-threading. I had one stem where the male thread felt rough for the first few turns. Running an M10 x 1 die lightly over it cleaned it up and it mated fine afterward. If you don’t keep taps and dies around, a few forward-and-back passes by hand, with a drop of light machine oil, may be all you need to ease a tight fit.
Installation experience
For my kitchen pendants, the process was straightforward:
- Kill power and lower the canopy.
- Disconnect the existing stem, thread the pendant cable through one KUMGROT stem (200 mm), and reconnect the canopy.
- Use the included coupling to add a second stem on one pendant to match the height of its pair.
- Hand-tighten everything, then snug by hand while holding the pendant body to keep the finish pristine. A nylon strap wrench is nice if you have one; pliers can mar the coating.
On the chandelier, I replaced a longer stem with a single 200 mm piece. Taking out exactly one segment and reusing the existing canopy simplified the job. The rods can be stacked in clean 200 mm increments with the couplings, which keeps lines consistent across multiple fixtures.
The “tool-free” idea holds up for the stems and couplings themselves—hand tightening was adequate and rattle-free in my installs. The only tools I needed were for the fixture’s junction box screws and wire connections.
Wiring clearance
The 0.28-inch internal diameter is generous enough for standard pendant runs:
- Two-conductor 18 AWG lamp cord glides through easily.
- Three-conductor 18 AWG (hot/neutral/ground) fits fine, though cloth-overbraid adds a little friction at bends.
- If you’re using thicker decorative cable or additional sleeving, feed from both ends and meet in the middle; it reduces snags.
The interior edges at the openings are reasonably smooth. Still, I like to add a short grommet or heat-shrink at any exit point where wire meets metal. It’s cheap insurance against abrasion over time.
Finish match and aesthetics
The black coating lands in a neutral zone—neither deep matte nor reflective—so it blended acceptably with a mix of “matte black” and “oil-rubbed black” components I had on hand. Under direct light, you can see slight shade differences between brands. For me, that wasn’t an issue once everything was installed, especially with the stems mostly in shadow. If you’re joining to high-gloss black hardware, expect a visible mismatch.
The couplings are short (20 mm), so they don’t visually interrupt the line of the stem. Once installed, the join looks intentional rather than improvised.
Strength and stability
These are iron rods and feel up to the task for standard residential fixtures. That said, stems transfer weight, not bear it alone. Your junction box, mounting bracket, and canopy hardware still do the heavy lifting. I’d have no concerns using these on typical pendants and mid-size chandeliers. For unusually heavy fixtures, follow the fixture manufacturer’s guidance and add a safety cable if recommended.
The snug thread fit helps prevent fixture sway and loosening over time. After a few weeks, nothing had backed off or creaked, even with doors slamming and HVAC cycling.
What I’d improve
- Thread tolerance and consistency: One stem in my kit needed a touch-up. It’s not a showstopper, but chasing threads shouldn’t be part of a brand-new install. Slightly looser tolerance or better post-coating cleanup would help.
- Clearer thread spec labeling: It’s marked as M10, but explicitly listing the pitch (M10 x 1) on the packaging would help avoid adapter surprises for users mixing standards.
- Optional solo couplings: The couplings are well-made and useful as stand-alone extenders or replacements. Offering them as a separate purchase would be convenient when you only need the connectors.
Who it’s for
- DIYers updating fixture heights across a room and wanting consistent, clean increments without cutting or repainting tubes.
- Pros who regularly encounter M10-based fixtures and need a dependable stash of stems and couplings in a common finish.
- Anyone consolidating mismatched hardware into a unified, black-stem look across multiple lights.
If your world is exclusively 1/8-IP, you can still use the kit with adapters, but you may be better served by a kit natively threaded to your standard.
Tips for best results
- Test-fit threads before wiring everything. If something binds, stop and check alignment; don’t force it.
- Protect the finish during tightening. A bit of painter’s tape or a strap wrench prevents scuffs.
- Plan your drop in 200 mm increments. For finer adjustments, consider adding a fixture-side mini-nipple or an alternate canopy with internal adjustment.
- Keep a couple of M10-to-1/8-IP adapters in your kit if you work on mixed-standard fixtures.
The bottom line
The KUMGROT stem kit does what I want a stem kit to do: it provides straight, durable rods with a clean black finish, repeatable lengths, and couplings that disappear visually once installed. The wiring bore is appropriately sized, the finish holds up during assembly, and stacked segments look intentional rather than pieced together.
Thread fit is on the tight side, which I personally prefer for long-term stability, but it demands attention during assembly. One rough thread in my set needed a quick cleanup, and that’s the main blemish on an otherwise tidy kit. Compatibility is the other watchout—these are M10 parts, so plan accordingly if you’re working in a 1/8-IP ecosystem.
Recommendation: I recommend this kit for anyone working with M10-threaded fixtures who needs reliable, modular stems in a black finish. It’s cost-effective for multi-fixture projects, the parts feel sturdy, and the results are clean and professional once installed. If your hardware is primarily 1/8-IP and you don’t want to juggle adapters, look for a kit in your native thread standard; otherwise, this set is a solid, no-drama solution for everyday pendant, chandelier, and lamp stem work.
