Milton EX5005KIT 50 Piece Professional Air Tool Kit Review
Why I pulled this kit off the shelf
I keep a few go-to air tools at the ready, but lately I’ve been wanting a compact, self-contained set I could grab for weekend suspension work, quick wheel swaps, and occasional metal cleanup. That’s what led me to this Milton kit: a 50-piece bundle with the core air tools I reach for most (1/2" impact, 3/8" ratchet, die grinder, and air hammer), plus sockets, blow gun, fittings, and a case. I ran it for several weeks on two compressors—a mid-size 26-gallon unit that puts out around 5–6 SCFM at 90 PSI, and a larger stationary machine north of 10 SCFM—to see how it behaves in both a typical garage and a better-supplied shop setup.
What you get and setup notes
The case is well laid out, and I didn’t have to hunt for anything. Milton includes M-style plugs (five male, one female), which I installed right away along with a drop of oil in each tool. You get:
- 1/2" impact wrench (rated 500 ft-lbs, adjustable forward/reverse power)
- 3/8" air ratchet (60 ft-lbs, 160 RPM)
- 1/4" die grinder (25,000 RPM, throttle lever)
- Air hammer (4,500 BPM) with chisel/point bits and spring retainer
- Impact sockets with extension and adapter
- Blow gun with three nozzles, tire gauge (to 50 PSI), dual air chuck
- Screwdriver bits, inflation needles, small hand wrenches, oil, tape, and the hard case
Build quality is better than I expected at this price point. The housings are solid, controls click positively, and none of the tools felt like throwaways.
Ergonomics and first impressions
- The impact has a compact frame and a nice, progressive trigger. The forward power settings make it easy to snug without over-torquing, then flip to reverse for removal.
- The ratchet’s head is a bit taller than premium units, so access in tight engine bays can be hit-or-miss, but the handle feels secure and the paddle is predictable.
- The die grinder uses a safety throttle lever that’s easy to modulate. Vibration is moderate.
- The air hammer’s spring retainer is simple and secure, and bit swaps are fast.
Noise is about what you’d expect for pneumatics—ear protection recommended. With a 3/8" hose and quick couplers in good condition, I saw minimal pressure drop at the tools.
Performance in the garage
1/2" impact wrench
On the 26-gallon compressor, the impact handled lug nuts torqued to 100 ft-lbs with ease and zipped off typical suspension hardware in the 120–140 ft-lb range after a couple of hammer bursts. On a larger compressor with higher SCFM, it felt noticeably stronger and faster. Rusted fasteners were the dividing line: it eventually broke a stubborn rear lower control arm bolt loose, but only after soaking with penetrant and giving the tool a few sustained hits.
Torque claims are always generous in marketing. In real-world use, the impact felt like it’s operating in the mid-tier category rather than the bruiser class. That’s not a knock; for general DIY and light professional work, it did what I asked as long as I fed it adequate air and gave it a clean 90 PSI at the tool.
What I liked:
- Strong enough for wheels, brakes, and most suspension fasteners
- Good trigger control and power settings in forward
- Balanced and not overly heavy
What to watch:
- Small compressors will cycle; keep bursts short and let pressure recover for best results
- On heavily corroded fasteners, you may still need heat or a breaker bar
3/8" air ratchet
The ratchet is quick and useful for running fasteners in and out, exactly what I want from a 3/8" unit. It’ll break loose smaller fasteners, but at 60 ft-lbs rated, this is a running tool more than a breaker. Mine felt smooth and didn’t balk under normal loads, but when I leaned on it to crack a stubborn alternator bracket bolt, the head slipped and I switched to a manual ratchet. Use it as intended and it’s handy; overtax it and you’ll shorten its life.
1/4" die grinder
This was a pleasant surprise. With five included stones, it made quick work of gasket cleanup and deburring cuts on mild steel. Like any die grinder, it’s air-hungry. On the smaller compressor it ran fine in short bursts; on the big tank it sang at full speed without stalling. The throttle is nicely progressive, which helped avoid digging grooves into aluminum surfaces. If you plan on heavy grinding or using carbide burrs for long stretches, plan on a higher-SCFM supply.
Air hammer
At 4,500 BPM, it’s snappy and useful for exhaust flange bolts, separating ball joints (with the right technique and care), and persuading stuck rotors. The included chisel and point bits are basic but serviceable; a quick dress on the bench grinder helped. Vibration is noticeable—gloves are your friend—and like most budget hammers, it benefits from regular oiling to keep the action brisk.
Accessories: sockets, blow gun, gauge
The impact sockets and extension are legit impact-grade and fit cleanly with minimal wobble. The selection covers common sizes, but you may want deeper or specialty sizes over time. The blow gun with interchangeable nozzles is convenient for cleanup and drying, and the tire gauge/dual chuck proved accurate enough for garage use.
Air supply matters
The difference between an “okay” and “great” experience with this kit often came down to air supply.
- Hose: Use a 3/8" ID hose if possible; 1/4" hoses and restrictive fittings choke flow.
- Pressure: Regulator at 90 PSI under load. Don’t just set static pressure—pull the trigger and check.
- SCFM: Impacts are forgiving in bursts; grinders and hammers need sustained flow. If your compressor is rated around 5–6 SCFM at 90 PSI, pace your work to allow recovery.
I also recommend a few drops of air tool oil at the start of each session and a couple in the air hammer and die grinder mid-session on long days. A mini in-line oiler is a nice upgrade if you’ll use these often.
Durability and maintenance
After several weeks, the impact and grinder are still running strong and consistent. The ratchet shows the most sensitivity to abuse; keep it for running fasteners, and don’t use it as a breaker bar. None of the tools leaked air at the fittings once I used thread tape and snugged them properly. As with any pneumatic set, religious oiling and clean, dry air extend life—if your shop air is wet, add a water separator.
The case is tougher than it looks and keeps everything from knocking around in the truck. If you toss tools into a drawer, you’ll lose bits; keeping them in the case makes this kit feel like a mini mobile station.
Where this kit fits
- Ideal for: DIYers, home garages, farm maintenance, and light professional tasks where portability and breadth of tools matter.
- Less ideal for: Daily professional use with heavy, corroded hardware or continuous grinding where a high-end, high-torque impact and separate pro-grade tools make more sense.
Pros
- Well-rounded tool selection with useful accessories and M-style fittings
- Impact has respectable real-world power with good control
- Die grinder is smooth and easy to modulate
- Air hammer is quick to set up and effective for typical tasks
- Organized, durable case that actually gets used
Cons
- Ratchet is best treated as a runner, not a breaker; head height limits access
- Impact’s top-end torque depends heavily on air supply and won’t replace a premium gun on seized fasteners
- Included chisel bits benefit from a quick sharpen; you’ll outgrow the socket selection
Recommendation
I recommend this Milton kit for anyone building out a home garage or looking for a compact, ready-to-work pneumatic set. It covers the essentials, performs reliably when fed proper air, and the case plus fittings make setup painless. If your day job is battling rusted suspension bolts eight hours a day, invest in higher-torque standalone tools. For the rest of us rotating tires, refreshing brakes, tackling moderate suspension work, and doing the occasional metal cleanup, this kit hits a very practical sweet spot for capability, convenience, and cost.
