Milwaukee 1/4" x 18" Bellhanger Bit Review
The Milwaukee 1/4" x 18" Bellhanger Bit, model 48-13-7225, is a versatile tool designed primarily for the installation of small wire systems, such as phone lines or doorbell wires. Having used this bit for multiple projects, I can confidently say that it stands out in both functionality and durability, though not without a few caveats.
One of the defining features of this bellhanger bit is the pull-through hole in the tip. This small but significant detail makes threading wires through drilled holes a much simpler task. When installing a doorbell wire, for instance, I found that I could effortlessly pull the wire through without having to fish around blindly. This feature alone can save a considerable amount of time and frustration. However, attaching the wire to the bit requires some finesse, as it needs to be wound through the grooves to secure it properly.
The aggressive tip geometry of the bit ensures fast cutting through various materials. When I tested it on wood, it cut through effortlessly, leaving clean and precise holes. The bit's coated flutes also played a crucial role in efficient debris removal, ensuring that the bit didn't get clogged and maintained its cutting efficiency throughout the project. This makes it particularly useful for tasks that involve drilling through thicker or more resistant materials.
One aspect that truly impressed me was the 3-Flat Secure-Grip™ shank. This design feature helps prevent the bit from slipping in the drill chuck, providing a more stable and secure drilling experience. While drilling through a thick wooden floor to install phone lines, the bit maintained its position without any slippage, making the task much easier and reducing the risk of damaging the material or the bit itself.
However, the bit's performance can be inconsistent, particularly when dealing with tougher materials like red oak or metal. During one project, I attempted to drill through 3/4" plywood and tin siding, and the bit snapped after 13 holes. This was disappointing, especially considering the reputation of Milwaukee tools for their durability. It seems that while the bit excels in many situations, it may not be the best choice for more demanding materials or extended use in tougher conditions.
Flexibility can be both an asset and a drawback for this bit. On the one hand, its length and flexibility make it ideal for reaching and drilling in tight or awkward spaces. On the other hand, this same flexibility can make it difficult to keep the bit straight when drilling deep holes, particularly in wood. This can result in slightly angled holes if one is not careful, which might be problematic for precision work.
Despite these issues, the bit has proven to be excellent for a variety of other tasks. For instance, I used it to drill new holes into the frozen ground to mark my driveway in snow country. The bit performed exceptionally well, cutting through the hard, frozen ground like butter. This unexpected use case showcased the bit's versatility and effectiveness in situations beyond wire installation.
The bit also proved its worth during a dryer vent installation. Inspired by an episode of "Ask This Old House," I used it to drill through the floor and walls for running the vent pipe. The bit's long length was particularly useful for this task, allowing me to drill from one side and easily reach the other. It delivered clean cuts and performed the task efficiently, reinforcing its value for home improvement projects.
In terms of build quality, the bit appears solid and well-constructed, matching what one would expect from a Milwaukee product. However, seeing that some units may not hold up against tougher materials does raise questions about consistency in manufacturing. Despite these concerns, my overall experience has been largely positive, with the bit delivering reliable performance in most scenarios.
Would I recommend the Milwaukee 1/4" x 18" Bellhanger Bit? For the most part, yes. Its specialized features, such as the pull-through hole and aggressive tip geometry, make it highly effective for wire installation and general drilling tasks. The 3-Flat Secure-Grip™ shank adds an extra layer of stability, and the bit's length and flexibility provide versatility for various applications.
However, if your projects frequently involve drilling through tougher materials like metal or hardwoods, you might want to consider a more robust option. The bit's tendency to snap under high stress could be a limitation for more demanding tasks. For most home improvement and wire installation needs, though, this bit offers excellent performance and convenience, making it a worthy addition to your toolkit.
