Milwaukee #2 Step Drill Bit, 3/16" - 1/2" by 1/16" Review

1.6 out of 5

Exploring the world of step drill bits, Milwaukee's #2 Step Drill Bit, 3/16" - 1/2" by 1/16" (model 48-89-9202) caught my eye. Milwaukee is a brand known for its reliability and robustness, so I had high expectations when I first tried out this drill bit. The bit is designed to drill both small and large-diameter holes in materials like steel and plastic, boasting a dual-flute design for enhanced speed and control. On paper, it seemed like an ideal addition to any drill kit, especially with features like the Rapid Strike tip and black oxide coating that promised durability and extended bit life.

When I first picked up the Milwaukee step drill bit, it felt solid and well-engineered. The laser-engraved reference marks were a nice touch, making it easy to identify sizes while drilling. The 3-flat Secure-Grip shank reduced slippage in the drill chuck, allowing for a more secure and precise drilling experience.

I decided to put the bit through its paces on a variety of materials, starting with some thin sheet metal. The Rapid Strike tip did indeed make for accurate starts, and the bit cut through the material smoothly. I was impressed with how quickly it progressed through the steps, thanks to the dual-flute design. Speed and control were definitely on point here.

However, my initial enthusiasm began to wane after a few more uses. On my second attempt, the tip snapped off midway through drilling a hole in a metal control panel made of 16-gauge sheet metal. This was quite unexpected and disappointing, especially from a brand like Milwaukee. I figured it might have been a fluke, so I tried another bit from the set. Unfortunately, I experienced similar issues. The second bit also struggled, particularly at the larger diameter steps, and eventually dulled quicker than I would have anticipated.

In another test, I used the bit on 1/8" angle iron. While the first few holes were drilled seamlessly, the bit's performance deteriorated as I continued. The drill bit began to struggle at the 7/16" step, and soon after, it just wouldn't cut anymore. Switching to a lower speed didn't help much either.

One aspect that stood out positively was the customer support from Milwaukee. After encountering issues with the bit, I contacted their support team. They were prompt and sent me a replacement set, which is commendable. Good customer service is always a plus, and Milwaukee seems to excel in that department.

Despite the excellent customer service, the recurring issue of the bit snapping or dulling quickly is a major concern. The black oxide coating, which is supposed to enhance durability, didn't seem to make a significant difference in the bit's lifespan. This was particularly disheartening given the higher price point of the Milwaukee step drill bit compared to other brands.

I also tried the bit on plastic materials, where it performed better. The bit cut through plastic smoothly and without any hiccups. However, given that the bit is advertised for both metal and plastic, its poor performance on metal is a significant drawback.

In conclusion, while the Milwaukee #2 Step Drill Bit has some excellent features like the Rapid Strike tip, dual-flute design, and secure-grip shank, its durability on metal materials leaves much to be desired. The repeated issues with the bit snapping or dulling quickly overshadow its initial performance and innovative features.

Would I recommend this tool? Unfortunately, no. Despite Milwaukee's strong reputation and excellent customer service, the durability issues with this step drill bit make it hard to justify its higher price point. For those primarily working with plastic, this bit might still be a viable option. However, for anyone needing a reliable bit for metal, there are more durable and cost-effective options available in the market. The promise of speed and control is there, but until Milwaukee addresses the durability issues, I would suggest looking elsewhere.
