Features

  • MARINE SEALANT: Our liquid formula creates a UV-stable coating for protection against the elements, saltwater spray, and water damage. Marine is a great protector for outdoor furniture, thermally modified wood, and boat docks. Marine is safe for use over open water and is non-hazardous to aquatic life.
  • DECK STAIN: It's water-based, ultra-low VOC, great for enhancing the extended life of your flooring, siding, and porch. The paint forms a water-resistant shield around wood fibers at the cellular level to help preserve the natural color.
  • WATERPROOF WOOD SEALER: The wood used on boat docks, decks, and retaining walls near rivers, lakes, oceans, and ponds is subjected to constant moisture. We crafted a sealer, remove stain, and finish all in one, specifically for these installations.
  • WOOD SEALANT: Our fast-drying protector penetrates wood below the surface, coating the wood fibers at the cellular level, which creates a long-lasting, flexible, breathable barrier. It provides a no-fuss, easy clean-up with soap and water.
  • SEAL-ONCE: Our user-friendly wood sealers and stains are an effective way to protect your lumber or concrete against water damage. When you use Seal-Once, you have the satisfaction of knowing our products will not harm pets, plants, or people.

Why I reached for this sealer

I wanted a marine-grade wood sealer I could brush on in an afternoon without worrying about fumes, sticky solvent cleanup, or what might wash into the water below my dock. Seal-Once’s Marine sealer checked the boxes on paper: water-based, ultra-low VOC, safe over open water, and available in a tinted “Bronze Cedar” finish. I used it across a few projects—an aging lakeside dock section, a small cedar deck landing, and an outdoor teak side table—to see how it behaved on both softwood and hardwood in a high-moisture setting.

Prep and application

This product rewards prep. Any waterproofer will, but especially a penetrating sealer like this one. On the cedar deck landing, I washed with a mild deck cleaner, let it dry thoroughly, and gave it a quick pass with 120–150 grit to open the grain. On the teak table, I sanded to 150 and finished with 220 to even out old finish lines. I also tested a small, inconspicuous spot first to be sure the sealer soaked in readily—if it sits on the surface, you’re either over-sanding, dealing with an old coating, or the wood still has mill glaze or contaminants.

I applied with a synthetic brush and a pad applicator. Both worked, but the brush made it easier to gauge how much product the wood was accepting. A key here is light, even coats. I worked a board or two at a time, kept a wet edge, and avoided leaving shiny puddles. The instructions recommend a second coat while the first is still receptive; in practice, I found that roughly 10–20 minutes was about right—long enough for the first coat to soak in, not so long that it fully set. The second pass was lighter than the first.

A sprayer would be fine for rails and vertical surfaces, but I’d still back-brush to help penetration and prevent lap marks.

Dry time and cure

Initial dry time is quick. On a mild, low-humidity day, the surface felt dry to the touch within an hour. I still gave the deck and dock pieces a solid 48 hours before regular foot traffic and splash exposure. With any water-based sealer, curing is where patience pays off—especially on horizontal surfaces that see sun and standing water. Don’t apply in the morning dew or late day when the wood is cooling down; mid-day, with dry boards, gave me the best penetration and an even, non-tacky finish.

Finish and color

“Bronze Cedar” is a warm, semi-transparent tint that enriched grain and knocked back the raw lightness of fresh cedar without hiding character. On the teak table, it subtly warmed the tone; on weathered cedar, it evened out the sun-splotched grays with a low-sheen, natural look. If you’re expecting a heavy, film-forming gloss, that’s not this product. The finish is more of a breathable, flexible barrier inside the wood fibers rather than a plastic-like coating on top. That’s exactly what you want in a high-moisture environment where trapped vapor and rigid films can cause peeling.

Performance near water

On the dock boards, the sealer shed water immediately. After a rain, droplets beaded and rolled off rather than soaking in, and I didn’t see the telltale darkening that precedes swelling. The surface retained a “wood” feel—no waxy slickness—so traction stayed good when wet. Salt spray and UV are the twin enemies of shoreline wood; while I obviously can’t compress seasons of exposure into a week, the combination of UV-stable tint and a non-brittle, penetrating binder is the right approach for resisting graying and checking over time.

I also appreciated the peace of mind using it over water. It has a low odor during application and cleans up with soap and water, so I wasn’t juggling solvent rags and spill concerns next to the lake.

Durability and maintenance expectations

Any sealer’s longevity hinges on exposure and preparation. On horizontal, sun-baked surfaces, plan on periodic maintenance coats. My experience with similar penetrating systems is that two light refresher coats every 2–3 years on decks and docks keeps performance high; vertical siding or rails can go longer. Because this isn’t a brittle film, maintenance is straightforward: clean, let dry, confirm penetration, and reapply. You’re not stripping a varnish layer.

The breathable nature was noticeable—my boards didn’t develop the cloudy “trapped moisture” look that can happen with heavy films after a rain. If you do see a milky blush or tackiness, it usually points to application over damp wood, heavy/pooled coats, or humid, cool conditions during cure. In that case, give it more time, gently wash and rinse, and if needed, lightly abrade shiny patches and reapply thinly to let the wood drink it in.

Compatibility and limitations

  • New lumber often has mill glaze or surface treatments that resist penetration. Clean and sand to ensure the first coat soaks in.
  • Previously oiled or waxy products can block this sealer. If water doesn’t absorb into the wood in a test spot, removal or weathering is required.
  • Below-grade, constantly saturated posts are a different challenge. A water-based, breathable sealer is not a substitute for specialized preservative treatments for buried wood.
  • Color consistency: as with any semi-transparent tint, the final look depends on species and prep. Test boards help dial in expectations.

Tips for best results

  • Check moisture: the wood should feel dry and ready to accept product. If a droplet of water beads, it’s not time yet.
  • Sand smart: 120–150 grit for decks; don’t polish the surface to the point that you close the pores.
  • Two light coats: apply the second while the first is still receptive. Avoid heavy, shiny layers.
  • Work the weather: choose a warm, dry day with low humidity. Avoid direct blazing sun on very hot boards.
  • Back-brush: even with a sprayer, back-brushing evens the application and improves penetration.
  • Stir thoroughly: pigments settle; keep the tint uniform from start to finish.

Environmental and cleanup notes

This is where the product shines. Odor is minimal, there’s no headache of solvent cleanup, and I was comfortable using it near open water. Brushes cleaned up with dish soap and warm water in minutes. For a multi-day project, the quick recoat window helps you move fast without tying up a whole weekend.

Pros

  • Water-based, ultra-low VOC; low odor and easy soap-and-water cleanup
  • Penetrating, breathable barrier that resists water without forming a brittle film
  • UV-stable tint that enhances grain and helps preserve color
  • Safe for use near and over open water
  • Fast recoat window; two light coats go quickly
  • Natural, low-sheen finish with good traction when wet

Cons

  • Demands proper prep and conditions; over-application can lead to tackiness or cloudiness
  • Not ideal over previous oil-based or waxy coatings without significant prep
  • Semi-transparent tint means color varies by species and prep
  • Horizontal marine exposures will still require regular maintenance coats

Final recommendation

I recommend Seal-Once’s Marine sealer for docks, decks, and outdoor furniture where you want durable water repellency, a natural look, and low-VOC application—especially around waterways. It’s straightforward to use, quick to recoat, and the breathable, penetrating approach is better suited to wet environments than heavy films. Just respect the prep: clean, sand appropriately, verify penetration, and apply two light coats under the right weather conditions. Do that, and you get a protective finish that looks good, sheds water, and is easy to maintain over time.
