Craftsman 16 in 42 cc 2-Cycle Gas Chainsaw Review

3.1 out of 5

Operating a chainsaw is one of those tasks that can either be a seamless experience or a complete headache, depending on the tool in hand. Recently, I had the opportunity to put the Craftsman 16 in 42 cc 2-Cycle Gas Chainsaw (model CMXGSAMY42N6) through its paces. While this chainsaw has a number of notable features, my overall experience with it was a mixed bag.

Design and Build Quality

First off, the chainsaw's lightweight design immediately stands out. At just 12.2 pounds, it’s relatively easy to handle, especially for those who may not have extensive experience with chainsaws. The 3-point anti-vibration system is another thoughtful addition, aimed at reducing user fatigue and providing better control during prolonged use. However, despite these positive aspects, the build quality leaves much to be desired. The unit feels somewhat flimsy, and various components appear to be made from low-quality materials that don't inspire long-term confidence.

Starting Mechanism

One of the most frustrating aspects of using this chainsaw was the pull start mechanism. While it started up relatively easily the first couple of times, subsequent uses proved to be a challenge. After running the saw for about 10-15 minutes, it became almost impossible to restart until it had completely cooled down. This significantly hampers productivity, especially if you have a lot of cutting to do in a short amount of time. The pull cord itself also feels like it could snap at any moment, which is not reassuring when you’re in the middle of a job.

Performance

When it comes to cutting performance, the Craftsman chainsaw does a decent job on smaller trees and branches. The 42 cc engine provides sufficient power for most light to medium tasks. I found that it handled branches and trunks up to about 14 inches in diameter without too much trouble. However, for larger or hardwood trees, the saw struggled. It went through fuel quickly and even burned the wood on one occasion, which was concerning.

Safety Features

Safety is always a priority when working with chainsaws, and Craftsman has included several features to enhance user safety. The self-activated chain brake is a welcome addition, designed to stop the chain immediately in case of kickback. However, the chain brake mechanism itself can be somewhat finicky, occasionally locking up and refusing to disengage without some effort. This can be both frustrating and dangerous if it happens in the middle of a cutting job.

Maintenance

Maintaining the chainsaw is relatively straightforward thanks to the tool-free access to the spark plug and filter. The adjustable automatic oiler also helps keep the chain lubricated, although I did notice some oil leakage when the saw was stored. This isn't a deal-breaker but is something to be aware of if you plan to store the saw indoors or in a place where oil spills could be problematic.

Durability and Longevity

Durability is where this chainsaw falls short. After just a few uses, I encountered several issues that required attention. The chain needed constant tightening, and the pull cord mechanism seemed prone to failure. Additionally, the plastic housing around the bar tightening screw wore down quickly, making it difficult to maintain proper chain tension. These issues are disappointing, especially for a tool that is supposed to withstand the rigors of outdoor work.

Comfort and Usability

On the positive side, the chainsaw is relatively comfortable to use, thanks to its lightweight design and anti-vibration system. I didn’t experience much fatigue during short cutting sessions, which is a plus for those who may not be accustomed to handling heavier chainsaws. The ergonomic design makes it easier to maneuver, but these benefits are somewhat overshadowed by the frequent need for adjustments and maintenance.

Conclusion

In summary, the Craftsman 16 in 42 cc 2-Cycle Gas Chainsaw has some commendable features, such as its lightweight design, anti-vibration system, and safety mechanisms. However, these positives are outweighed by its inconsistent performance, challenging starting mechanism, and questionable durability. While it may suffice for occasional light-duty tasks, it falls short for more demanding or frequent use.

Given my experience, I cannot recommend this chainsaw for anyone who needs a reliable, high-performance tool for regular use. The frequent starting issues, fuel inefficiency, and overall build quality make it a less-than-ideal choice. For those in need of a dependable chainsaw, it might be worth investing in a more robust and reliable brand, even if it comes at a higher price. The frustrations and downtime associated with this model simply don't justify the initial savings.
