Makita 14" 32cc Chain Saw Review

2.0 out of 5

It’s not often that I find myself wrestling with a tool, but the Makita 14" 32cc Chain Saw, model EA3200SRBB, has certainly kept me on my toes. At first glance, this chain saw promises the robust performance Makita is known for, with a 32cc engine delivering 1.8 HP and a maximum engine speed of 12,800 RPM. But, as we know, the devil is in the details.

Out of the box, the chain saw feels solid. Weighing in at 9 lbs without the bar and chain, it strikes a good balance between heft and manageability. The compact design is a plus, especially for those who plan to use it for occasional yard work or light-to-moderate cutting tasks. The inclusion of a 14" guide bar makes it versatile enough for a variety of applications, from trimming branches to cutting small logs.

One of the standout features is the Easy Start spring-assisted starter. In theory, this should simplify the starting process, especially in cold weather. The primer for efficient cold starting is a thoughtful addition, particularly for those of us who don’t have the luxury of avoiding outdoor tasks during the chillier months. However, my experience with starting the saw has been hit or miss. There were times when it roared to life effortlessly, but on other occasions, I found myself repeatedly pulling the cord, adjusting the choke, and still struggling to get it going.

The Touch & Stop single lever control for engine shutdown is a nice touch, providing a straightforward way to turn off the engine quickly. This feature is particularly useful when you need to stop the saw in a hurry, adding an extra layer of safety.

Speaking of safety, the saw comes equipped with a durable inertia/mechanical chain brake. This is essential for preventing kickback injuries, which can be a significant concern with chain saws. The large metal spike bar also aids in stability and productivity, allowing for more controlled and efficient cuts.

One area where the Makita chain saw excels is in user comfort. The advanced vibration dampening system is effective, reducing the strain on my hands and arms during extended use. This is a crucial feature, as prolonged exposure to vibration can lead to discomfort and even long-term health issues. Additionally, the saw has large fuel and oil tank openings with S-form caps, making refueling and oiling less of a hassle. The easy-to-clean chain compartment is another practical feature, simplifying maintenance and prolonging the life of the saw.

Despite these positives, the performance of the EA3200SRBB isn’t without its frustrations. The carburetor seems particularly finicky. I found myself constantly adjusting the carb ports, trying to achieve a smooth and consistent run. More often than not, the saw would either flood or stall before I could make any significant progress on my cutting tasks. This inconsistency is a significant drawback, especially when compared to other models in Makita’s lineup that offer more reliable performance.

The saw’s power is adequate for its intended use. With a power rating of 1.8 HP and a 50:1 fuel mixture, it can handle most small to medium-sized cutting tasks. However, it’s important to note that this saw is designed for occasional users. It’s not built for heavy-duty or professional-grade applications. If you’re a homeowner looking to maintain your yard or tackle light landscaping projects, the EA3200SRBB might suffice. But for more demanding tasks, you might find its performance lacking.

In terms of overall usability, the saw is relatively user-friendly. The flush cut handle is a nice addition, providing better control and precision when making cuts close to the ground. The chain selection of 3/8 x .050 is standard and should be readily available at most hardware stores, making replacements straightforward.

One aspect that could be improved is the tool-less bar adjustment. This feature is available in other Makita models and greatly simplifies the process of tightening or loosening the chain. Unfortunately, the EA3200SRBB lacks this convenience, making bar adjustments more cumbersome.

To sum up, the Makita 14" 32cc Chain Saw (EA3200SRBB) has its strengths and weaknesses. It offers a compact design, effective vibration dampening, and thoughtful safety features, making it a viable option for occasional users with light to moderate cutting needs. However, the finicky carburetor and inconsistent starting performance are significant drawbacks that can’t be overlooked.

Would I recommend this chain saw? It depends on your specific needs and tolerance for occasional mechanical finickiness. If you’re a homeowner seeking a reasonably priced, compact chain saw for occasional use, and you don’t mind spending some time tinkering with the carburetor, the EA3200SRBB might be a good fit. However, if you require consistent, reliable performance for more demanding tasks, you might want to consider other models or brands that offer better reliability and ease of use.
