Ryobi Compact Brushless 6-1/2" Circular Saw Review
When tackling woodwork projects, having the right tools can make all the difference. I recently had the opportunity to test the Ryobi Compact Brushless 6-1/2" Circular Saw (model PSBCS01K1), a tool designed for both versatility and reliability. This saw is part of Ryobi's ONE+ system, which means it's compatible with the same 18V batteries that power a variety of Ryobi tools. This flexibility, combined with the saw's features and performance, makes it a solid addition to any DIY enthusiast or professional's toolkit.
The first thing that jumps out about this circular saw is its compact and lightweight design. Weighing in at a mere 25% less than some other models in its category, it's exceptionally easy to handle, which is a boon for extended use. The brushless motor delivers a no-load speed of up to 4,900 RPM, providing ample power to cut through various materials, from 2x lumber to plywood and even melamine. Using a 24-tooth carbide blade that comes with the saw, I found the cuts to be clean and precise, with minimal tear-out, thanks also in part to the adjustable depth gauge and bevel capacity.
One of the standout features of this saw is the LED work light. While it might seem like a minor addition, the LED significantly improves visibility in low-light conditions, ensuring that your cutting line remains clearly visible. This feature added a level of precision to my cuts that I hadn’t experienced with some of my older, corded saws. The safety lock-off button is another thoughtful addition, offering a layer of security by preventing accidental starts.
Changing the blade is straightforward, thanks to the onboard Allen wrench. The process is quick and simple, allowing you to switch blades without much hassle. This is particularly useful when you need to switch between different materials requiring different types of blades.
Dust control is an aspect that many overlook, but it is crucial for both visibility and cleanliness in the work area. The Ryobi saw includes a vacuum attachment that fits standard vacuum hoses. Connecting it to a shop vac efficiently collects sawdust, although, in my experience, it still lets some dust escape when cutting materials like MDF. Nevertheless, the attachment makes a noticeable difference in maintaining a cleaner workspace.
The saw's aluminum base plate contributes to its lightweight design and provides a sturdy platform for making accurate cuts. However, I did notice that on my unit, the bevel gauge was slightly misaligned. Adjusting the bevel was necessary to ensure that the blade was truly at zero degrees when the gauge read zero. It's a minor inconvenience but worth noting for those who rely on exact angles for their projects.
As with any cordless tool, battery life is a critical factor. Ryobi claims that this circular saw can deliver up to 350 cuts per charge. While I didn't count each cut, I found that using a 4.0Ah battery provided enough power for a full day's worth of intermittent cutting. For more intensive projects, having a couple of spare batteries on hand ensures that you won't be interrupted by a dead battery. The saw's performance did dip slightly when using smaller capacity batteries, so I recommend using at least a 4.0Ah battery for optimal performance.
One area where the saw fell short was in power when tackling larger, denser materials. While it handled 2x4s and lighter materials with ease, it did struggle somewhat with pressure-treated 2x12s and other larger stock. The saw could still make the cuts, but it required a slower, steadier pace to avoid stalling. This might be a consideration if your projects frequently involve heavier materials.
The Ryobi Compact Brushless Circular Saw also includes a bevel capacity of 0-50 degrees. This range is slightly more than the standard 45 degrees found on many saws, providing added versatility for various types of cuts. I found the bevel adjustments easy to make, and the saw maintained its settings well throughout use.
Ergonomically, the saw is well-designed. The handle is covered with a textured surface that provides a secure grip, even during extended use. The balance of the tool is excellent, making it comfortable to maneuver and control. The soft start feature and electric brake enhance safety and control, with the blade stopping almost immediately when the trigger is released.
Overall, the Ryobi Compact Brushless 6-1/2" Circular Saw is a well-rounded tool that combines power, portability, and ease of use. It excels in tasks that require precision and versatility, and its compatibility with the Ryobi ONE+ system adds to its appeal. While it may not replace a corded saw for heavy-duty tasks, it offers enough power and convenience for most DIY projects and light to medium professional use.
Would I recommend this tool? Absolutely. The Ryobi Compact Brushless Circular Saw provides a great balance of performance and portability. It's particularly advantageous for those who already use Ryobi's ONE+ system, as it integrates seamlessly into an existing set of tools. With its thoughtful design features and reliable performance, it stands out as a valuable addition to any workshop. The minor issues, such as the bevel gauge alignment and occasional power limitations, are outweighed by its many strengths. Whether you're a seasoned professional or a weekend DIYer, this saw is worth considering for your next project.
