A mid-torque workhorse with smart controls

I put the DeWalt DCF896 mid-range 20V impact wrench to work across a few familiar scenarios: swapping wheels on a work van, tackling a stubborn axle nut on a commuter car, and doing assembly work on a small trailer. It’s squarely a mid-torque tool, and it behaves like one: compact, controllable, and strong enough for most automotive and equipment tasks without the bulk of a high-torque impact.

At 6.95 inches long and about 3.5 pounds bare (roughly five pounds with a 5Ah pack), it fits into spaces where big impacts won’t. The handle shape and rubber overmold feel comfortably familiar if you’re already in the DeWalt ecosystem. Balance is good with a 5Ah battery, and the included belt clip is actually usable when you need both hands free.

Power and real-world performance

On paper, the numbers are 330 ft-lbs max fastening torque and up to 600 ft-lbs in reverse for breakaway.
