4.6 out of 5

First impressions

I strapped the Blukar headlamp on for a week of real-world tasks—feeding animals after dusk, crawling into a dim attic, an evening run, and a few power-outage drills at home. It immediately checked two boxes: it’s genuinely bright for its size, and it’s easy to live with. This is a compact, front-mounted light with both a focused spotlight (XPG LED) and a wide COB flood, USB-C charging, and a smart mix of modes including red light and gesture control. It comes as a two-pack, which sounds trivial until you’re halfway through a long evening of work and appreciate having a fully charged spare.

Design and comfort

At 2.96 oz, the Blukar headlamp is light enough to disappear once you’re moving. The elastic band is soft, breathable, and adjusts quickly whether I’m wearing it on a bare head, a baseball cap, or over a beanie. The band is removable and washable—handy after a sweaty run or a muddy job. The lamp tilts through four firm detents down to 45°, which was enough to put the hot spot exactly where I wanted it without the head bobbing or slipping.

Build quality is better than I expected for this class: the plastic shell has just enough give to shrug off bumps, and the USB-C port is gasketed under a rubber flap. IPX5 weather protection means rain is a non-event; I used it in a steady drizzle without issues. The lens will pick up small scratches if you whack branches or scrape tight spaces, but I didn’t see any meaningful effect on output.

A thoughtful touch: the buttons have a subtle glow-in-the-dark treatment. It’s a small quality-of-life improvement when you’re fumbling to find controls in a blackout.

Controls and modes

There are two buttons, and once you learn them, operation is straightforward:

  • Power/mode button: cycles the five standard modes—spot (XPG white), flood (COB white), spot+flood, red, and red strobe. A short press from any of these turns the light off, which I prefer to long-press-only designs.
  • Sensor button: toggles the motion-sensing system and selects one of three sensor-linked modes (spot, flood, or spot+flood). With the sensor active, a wave of the hand turns the light on or off.

Brightness is stepless on the white modes via a long press (down to a roughly 30% floor). That was low enough for tent and bedside reading without glare, and bright enough at the top end for yard work or trail running. The red mode is fixed brightness (as it should be) and preserves night vision for map checks, star gazing, or being visible on a bike without blinding people.

A vertical row of blue LEDs on the side gives a quick sense of remaining battery and charging status, and a small red indicator glows when motion sensing is active—useful to avoid accidental “why does this keep turning on and off?” moments.

One note on the sensor: it works well most of the time, but it’s sensitive. In tight spaces or when working with your hands close to your face, you can inadvertently trigger it. I use it selectively—great for gloved work, dog walks, or when I want to quickly blank the light as someone approaches.

Beam quality and real-world performance

The dual-emitter setup is the highlight here:

  • The XPG spot is tight and punchy, ideal for looking down a trail, aiming at a junction box, or identifying reflective eyes across a field.
  • The COB flood spreads light evenly across your immediate workspace—perfect for engine bays, under-sink repairs, or reading.

Using both together gives a balanced flood-with-center hotspot that feels “headlamp proper” for moving quickly in the dark. Color temperature is on the cool side, typical for this category. Color rendering is acceptable for general tasks; if you’re inspecting finishes or wiring colors in fine detail, you’ll still want a high-CRI work light.

Brightness claims aside, the practical takeaway is this: on its higher settings, the Blukar headlamp is more than enough for most outdoor and utility tasks. I never felt under-lit walking a dark path or navigating a shed. Indoors with reflective surfaces, the stepless dimmer is essential to avoid glare and eye fatigue.

I didn’t notice visible flicker in video or in person, which is good news if you plan to record while wearing it.

Battery and charging

Each lamp packs a 1200 mAh internal battery, rechargeable via USB-C. Charging from a typical phone charger took about two to three hours. I like that the kit includes two USB-A–to–USB-C cables—no hunting for extras.

Runtime, as always, depends on how you use it:

  • On medium brightness with flood or spot, I comfortably logged several hours of continuous use without obvious dimming.
  • On maximum output with both emitters, expect substantially less. It’s bright enough that you won’t need max for long stretches anyway.
  • The red mode sips power and feels like it could go all night.

There’s no user-swappable cell, so you can’t hot-swap a battery in the field. The two-pack arrangement is the practical workaround: keep one on the head, one charging from a power bank or in reserve. The battery gauge is accurate enough to plan a top-up before a long outing.

Durability and weather resistance

IPX5 means it handles rain, sweat, and splashes fine. I ran through a steady shower and later hosed mud off the headband; the electronics didn’t miss a beat. The band itself holds water and takes a bit to dry, but it doesn’t lose elasticity, and being washable extends its life. I banged the lamp body against a couple of low branches; the lens picked up minor scuffs but brightness and beam quality were unaffected.

Day-to-day use

The day-to-day experience is where this light quietly excels:

  • Evening chores: point the spot where you’re going, add flood when you need to work with both hands. Tilting down prevents blinding anyone you look at.
  • Dog walks and runs: light enough not to bounce, good peripheral spill with COB, and red mode for courtesy in busy areas.
  • Indoor projects: stepless dimming keeps glare manageable on shiny surfaces; the flood mode is perfect for tight quarters under a sink or inside a cabinet.
  • Power outages: the glow buttons, battery indicator, and red light make it easy to navigate a dark house without harsh light fatigue.

The motion sensor is a genuine quality-of-life feature in the right circumstances. I use a quick hand wave to kill the beam before I look up at someone or glance into a mirror—no fumbling for the button.

Where it falls short

  • No ultra-low “moonlight”: the stepless low is around 30%, which is fine for reading but still bright for midnight tent use where you want to keep things extremely dim.
  • Sensor sensitivity: in cramped work you can trigger it unintentionally. Turn it off in those scenarios.
  • No physical lockout: it’s possible to bump it on in a bag. Storing it with the head tilted or separating the lamp from the band helps, but a lockout would be better.
  • Non-replaceable battery: you can’t pop in a fresh cell. For multi-day trips without charging options, you’ll want a power bank or a different headlamp.
  • Cool tint and average CRI: acceptable for general use, but not a specialist’s inspection light.

Value

You’re getting two fully featured, USB-C rechargeable headlamps with spot and flood beams, red mode, stepless dimming, a tilt mechanism, IPX5 weather protection, and motion sensing. The performance-to-weight ratio is strong, and the comfort is excellent. The two-pack format is more than a price perk—it’s a practical system for longer tasks, lending to a partner, or keeping one in the car and one in the kit.

It’s not a caving light, nor a professional-grade, all-day, regulated work lamp with swappable 18650 cells. But for everyday tasks, home projects, after-dark runs, camping, and emergency readiness, it hits a very compelling balance.

Recommendation

I recommend the Blukar headlamp as a versatile, budget-friendly workhorse for everyday and outdoor use. It’s bright where it counts, the beam options make sense, and the stepless dimming plus red mode cover everything from trail finding to tent etiquette. USB-C charging and the included two-pack add real convenience and redundancy. If you need ultra-long runtime on max brightness, a user-replaceable battery, or high-CRI warm light for color-critical work, look elsewhere. For everyone else—homeowners, runners, campers, night-shift fixers—this is an easy, confidence-inspiring choice that’s comfortable to wear and simple to use.
