Craftsman Retractable Utility Knife Review

2.6 out of 5

Utility knives are one of those indispensable tools that I find myself reaching for time and again, whether it’s slicing through cardboard, trimming carpet edges, or even opening packages. Recently, I had the chance to use the Craftsman Retractable Utility Knife, model CMHT10928, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the Craftsman name, a brand that has long been associated with quality tools.

At first glance, the utility knife looked promising. It boasts several notable features, including a quick-release mechanism for tool-free blade changes, an integrated string cutter, and a swing-out blade storage compartment. Additionally, it includes three utility blades right out of the box. These features suggested a design focused on convenience and efficiency.

Upon unboxing, I found the design to be sleek and ergonomic. The knife felt comfortable in my hand, with a substantial grip that promised ease of use during prolonged tasks. However, my initial enthusiasm began to waver as I started the process of loading the blade.

The quick-release mechanism is designed to simplify the blade-changing process, but I found it to be counterintuitive and poorly executed. Without any clear instructions included in the packaging or readily available online, I was left to figure it out through trial and error. The metal grip lever needs to be pushed forward fully to expose a small black button, which then must be pressed to release the grip on the blade. This process was far from straightforward and left me concerned about the potential of cutting myself during the blade installation.

Once the blade was finally in place, I discovered that retracting and extending the blade was another challenge. The slider mechanism required significant force to move, especially in the final stages of extension and retraction. It felt as though the blade was catching on something inside the handle, making what should be a simple action frustratingly difficult. This issue was particularly annoying because a utility knife should offer quick and easy access to the blade.

Another aspect that left me disappointed was the blade storage compartment. While it's a nice feature to have spare blades on hand, the compartment itself was difficult to access. The latch was stiff and required a tool to pry open, rather than being easily opened by hand. Once opened, the blades were prone to falling out, as the storage compartment drops open rather than top-loading, which would have been more practical.

When it came to actual cutting performance, the knife was a mixed bag. On the positive side, the blade itself was sharp and cut through materials like cardboard and carpet with ease. However, the blade’s stability was a concern. Despite the knife’s comfortable grip, the blade wobbled significantly during use, which made precise cuts challenging and increased the risk of accidental slips.

Durability is another area where the Craftsman utility knife fell short. The overall build quality felt flimsy compared to other utility knives I’ve used. The plastic components inside the handle seemed prone to breaking, and the knife felt less robust than I expected from a brand like Craftsman. Additionally, the use of a Torx screw to open the handle for blade changes was puzzling, as it’s not a common tool that most users would have on hand. A standard Phillips screw would have been far more user-friendly.

After spending some time with the Craftsman Retractable Utility Knife, I found myself frustrated by its numerous shortcomings. The lack of clear instructions, combined with the difficult blade-changing process and poor retracting mechanism, made this tool more of a hassle than a help. Although it provides a comfortable grip and sharp blades, these positives were overshadowed by the persistent issues in usability and durability.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend the Craftsman Retractable Utility Knife, model CMHT10928. While it has some thoughtful features and a comfortable design, the practical execution falls short in several critical areas. A utility knife should be straightforward to use, reliable, and durable, but this model fails to deliver on these essential aspects. For those in need of a utility knife, I would suggest looking at other brands that offer more user-friendly and dependable options.
