Ryobi Detail Sander Sand Paper Review

3.6 out of 5

Navigating the world of detail sanders and sandpaper can be quite the task, especially when looking for something that promises both efficiency and versatility. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with Ryobi's Detail Sander Sand Paper, model A21D901, and I must say, it brought a mix of both highs and a few lows.

One of the standout features of this sandpaper set is its variety of grit options. The pack includes 60 grit, 100 grit, and 150 grit papers, with three pieces of each. This variety made it easy to switch between different levels of sanding intensity, from rough material removal to fine finishing. I particularly appreciated how the 60 grit paper effectively removed a significant amount of material quickly, while the 150 grit provided a smooth finish on wood surfaces.

The size of the sandpaper, measuring 2-7/8 inches, is perfect for getting into tight corners and small spaces. This is a crucial feature for anyone working on intricate projects or hard-to-reach areas, such as stair spindles or chair parts. The adhesive backing on these pads ensures they stay in place during use, which is vital for maintaining control and achieving a consistent finish. However, this adhesive backing is also where some issues arise.

The adhesive, while strong, can sometimes be too effective. During several grit changes, I found that peeling off the sandpaper would occasionally take pieces of the foam pad from my sander with it. This was especially problematic when I needed to switch grits frequently. Although warming the adhesive before removal made it slightly more manageable, it was still an inconvenience. A hook-and-loop (velcro) system, which is common in many other sanders, would have been a more user-friendly choice and could potentially eliminate the problem of damaging the sander's foam pad.

Compatibility is another aspect to consider. While this sandpaper set worked flawlessly with my Ryobi tools, it didn't fit as well with some other brands. For instance, the adhesive-backed sandpaper didn't match up with the hook-and-loop pad on my Central Machinery sander. This mismatch meant that even though the sandpaper itself was high quality and durable, it wasn't as universal as I had hoped. It's crucial to check the compatibility of your sander with adhesive-backed sandpaper before purchasing this set.

On the positive side, the durability of the Ryobi sandpaper is commendable. Even after extensive use, the sandpaper maintained its grit and didn't clog up quickly, which can often be a problem with lower-quality sandpapers. The stiff paper backing also added to its durability, allowing it to withstand rigorous sanding sessions without tearing or wearing down prematurely. For those who value longevity in their tools, this is a significant advantage.

In terms of performance, the Ryobi sandpaper excelled. It was efficient in material removal and provided a smooth finish on wood, metal, and even painted surfaces. The variety of grits included in the pack covered all steps of sanding, from initial roughing to final finishing. This made it a versatile addition to my toolkit, especially for detailed projects where different levels of sanding are required.

However, not all feedback was positive. Some users might find the size of the sandpaper pads to be slightly smaller than the standard pads that come with their multi-tools. This discrepancy can affect the fit and effectiveness of the sandpaper, especially if precision is a key requirement for your project. Additionally, the lack of indication on the packaging about the adhesive backing versus hook-and-loop system was a bit misleading and could lead to unexpected surprises during use.

Despite these drawbacks, the Ryobi Detail Sander Sand Paper set offers a lot of value. Its strong adhesive ensures a secure fit, the variety of grits caters to different sanding needs, and its durability means it can handle extensive use without frequent replacements. If you're using a Ryobi sander or any tool that matches the adhesive-backed system, this sandpaper set could be a great addition to your workshop.

In conclusion, would I recommend the Ryobi Detail Sander Sand Paper? Yes, but with some reservations. If you own a compatible tool and need a durable, versatile set of sandpapers that can handle various sanding tasks, this set is a solid choice. However, if you frequently switch grits or use a sander with a hook-and-loop system, you might encounter some challenges with the adhesive backing and compatibility. Overall, it's a reliable product that delivers on performance and durability, but be mindful of its limitations and ensure it fits your specific needs and tools before making a purchase.
