Bosch 40 pc Driven Impact Screwdriving and Drilling Custom Case Set Review

5.0 out of 5

A compact kit that actually earns its place in the bag

I brought the Bosch 40-piece impact set to a couple of real jobs: hanging cabinet hardware, assembling built-ins, and driving a few boxes of exterior screws into treated lumber. It’s a simple promise—mix the most-used driver bits with a handful of common drill sizes and wrap them in a case that doesn’t fight you. After a few weeks, I can say this set checks the right boxes for everyday work, with a few omissions worth noting.

Bit quality and driving performance

The driver bits are the backbone here, and they hold up. The torsion zone design isn’t just marketing talk; under an impact driver, the bits flex slightly on hard starts and stubborn fasteners, which helps prevent snap-offs and reduces the jarring feel you get with rigid, cheaper bits. I drove a mix of #8 and #10 screws into hardwood and hit some structural T25 screws into studs—the P2 and T25 bits both held their shape and didn’t mushroom or round off.

Fit is strong. The precision-milled tips seat positive in screw heads, and cam-out was noticeably reduced compared with generic bits. That’s most obvious with the Phillips P2, which is notorious for walking out under torque. Here, the bite is consistent and predictable. The Robertson (square) bits—R1 through R3—are also well-made, especially useful for cabinet work where square-drive hardware is common.

The magnets at the tips are a genuine help when starting screws one-handed or working overhead. They’re not so aggressive that they pull the screw back off when you back out, but they hold a #8 reliably. Expect the usual downside: magnets collect metal swarf over time; a quick wipe keeps them clean.

Laser-etched markings are easy to read and, more importantly, still visible after a weekend of dusty work. They don’t flake like paint. Heat treatment seems on point too—I didn’t chip or twist a bit, and the edges are still crisp.

What you get (and what you don’t)

Coverage is practical for most carpentry, furniture assembly, and general maintenance. The set includes:
- 23 insert bits: 2 × P1; 3 × P2; 2 × P2 (reduced); 1 × P3; 1 × R1; 4 × R2; 2 × R3; 1 × T5; 2 × T20; 3 × T25; 1 × T30; 1 × T40
- 7 two-inch power bits: 2 × P2; 1 × P3; 1 × R2; 1 × R3; 1 × T25; 1 × T30
- 8 black oxide drill bits: 2 × 1/16 in; 2 × 3/32 in; 1 × 1/8 in; 1 × 5/32 in; 1 × 3/16 in; 1 × 1/4 in
- 1 standard bit holder

The duplicates are smart: extra P2 and T25 are exactly what I burn through first. The two “P2 (reduced)” are handy for certain fasteners with shallow heads; they fit where standard P2s feel a touch loose.

There are gaps. You don’t get hex (Allen) bits, nut drivers, or security Torx. If you regularly service appliances, furniture hardware with hex sockets, or electronics that need pin-in Torx, you’ll want a supplemental kit. On the drill side, there’s no split-point or brad-point selection—these are standard black oxide twist bits meant for wood and mild steel. Sizes top out at 1/4 in, which covers pilot holes, clearance holes for light hardware, and small through-holes, but not larger carpentry tasks. I appreciate the duplicates of the smallest sizes (1/16 and 3/32); they’re the ones most likely to snap under ham-fisted use.

Drilling: good for pilots and light metal

The black oxide bits do what they’re supposed to. In pine and plywood, they cut cleanly; in oak, they still track straight with moderate pressure. Without a split point, they can wander on slick surfaces—use a punch or a starter hole if precision matters. In mild sheet steel, I was able to put in a series of 1/8 in holes without blueing the bit, but slow RPMs and cutting oil help. These are not masonry or stainless bits, and they’re not meant to be hammered by an impact driver. I chucked them in a drill/driver and they held fine.

If you care about perfectly clean entries in hardwood and laminates, brad-point bits will outperform these. For day-to-day pilot holes, cabinet hardware prep, and general jobsite tasks, they’re solid.

Case and organization

Bosch’s Custom Case System is genuinely useful. The internal trays are modular, and the tilt-in/tilt-out access means you can grab a single bit without lifting out a whole strip. The latch is secure—no mid-transport explosions—and the rubber bumpers do their job when the case takes a knock in the truck. The bit retention is tight enough that bits don’t work loose, but not so tight you’re wrestling them out with pliers.

I like that I can reorganize the layout. I moved the two-inch power bits to the front row and tucked the smaller insert bits behind them. If you own other Bosch Custom Case components, you can reconfigure further. One-handed opening is easy, and the form factor fits neatly in a tool tote or drill bag without hogging space.

In use with impact drivers

All the driver bits use a 1/4 in hex interface and are impact-rated. That matters: they seat positively in the chuck, don’t wobble, and tolerate the repeated torque spikes you get on long runs of screws. I ran the P2 and T25 in a brushless impact driver for a couple of hours straight on decking, and the torsion zone kept fatigue down—less harsh chatter, fewer slips.

The included standard bit holder is fine: magnetized, with decent concentricity. It’s not a locking collar style, so if you prefer a positive-lock extension, you’ll need to bring your own. For most tasks, the included holder is adequate.

Durability after a few weeks

No broken driver bits, no rounded tips, and the magnetic retention remains consistent. The black oxide drill bits show normal wear on the cutting edges but no pronounced dulling after typical usage. The case hasn’t popped open accidentally, and the trays haven’t loosened up.

As with any impact-rated bits, life depends on technique: proper bit selection, letting the tool do the work, and keeping the bit seated fully. Abuse anything long enough with a high-torque impact and it’ll lose. This set, though, lands on the durable side of the curve.

Shortcomings and wish list

  • Missing hex and nut driver sizes. A 1/4 in and 5/16 in nut driver would make this closer to an all-in-one.
  • Drill bit range tops out at 1/4 in. Fine for pilots; limited for larger fixtures and hardware.
  • No split-point bits. A couple of split-point pilots would reduce walking on metal and hardwood.
  • No color-coding. Laser-etching is readable, but quick color cues are faster in low light.

None of these are deal-breakers for general carpentry and maintenance, but they’re worth considering if your work skews toward mechanical assemblies or metal fabrication.

Who it suits

  • Carpenters and remodelers who need dependable P2, T25, and square bits with a few common drill sizes.
  • DIYers who want a compact set that covers assembly, hanging, and light drilling without buying multiple cases.
  • Service techs who already have nut drivers and hex bits, and want a reliable impact-rated driver set with a flexible case.

If you’re doing heavy metal work, masonry, or specialized electronics, look elsewhere or plan to supplement.

Recommendation

I recommend the Bosch 40-piece impact set for anyone who wants a well-made, impact-ready driver assortment with an actually useful case. The bits fit fasteners properly, the torsion zone smooths out impact driving and improves longevity, and the magnetic, laser-etched tips are practical touches that hold up. The drill bits are basic but serviceable for pilots and light metal. The customizable case is the quiet star—it keeps everything accessible and secure without adding bulk.

I’d like to see hex and nut drivers included and a couple of split-point pilots added. Even with those omissions, this set earns a permanent spot in my drill bag because it nails the essentials and doesn’t waste space on filler pieces. If your daily work revolves around wood, light metal, and general fastening, it’s an easy tool to recommend.

Creative

Knock-Down Camping Table

Build a sturdy, flat-pack table that assembles with Torx T25 construction screws and disassembles for transport. Use the black oxide bits to pre-drill 1/8 in pilot holes for cleaner joins, then drive with impact-rated T25 bits to avoid cam-out. Label fastener locations and include a small bag of spare screws in the case so everything stays together.

French-Cleat Wall With Case Dock

Create a modular French-cleat wall in the shop and make a small dock that captures the customizable case so it tilts in/out for quick access. Use R2/Phillips screws to build cleats and the included drill bits (3/32 in to 3/16 in) for pilots into studs. Add labeled slots for your most-used P2, R2, and T25 bits to turn the case into a grab-and-go station.

Hardwood Birdhouse With Service Door

Make a premium birdhouse from cedar or oak with a hinged clean-out door held by two R2 screws. Pre-drill 3/32 in pilots for small screws and a 1/4 in drainage hole in the base. The magnetic tips help hold tiny fasteners while you work one-handed on a ladder.

Flat-Pack Planter Crates

Cut slats and end frames for rustic planter crates that stack or nest. Pre-drill 1/8 in pilots and assemble with Torx T25 or Robertson R2 screws for a strong, repairable joint. Use the precision-milled tips to avoid stripping when driving into softwood near edges.

Wall-Mounted Picture Ledges

Build minimalist picture ledges with a back cleat and a front lip, then mount into studs. Use 5/32 in pilots for mounting screws and P2 bits to drive into studs without cam-out. The case keeps your P2s and T25s separated so installation runs quickly from room to room.
