First impressions and setup

I put this compact 20V DeWalt drill/driver to work across a week of cabinet installs and a couple of deck repairs. Out of the bag, the form factor is what grabs you: short front-to-back and easy to maneuver, with a comfortable, rubberized grip that fits the hand naturally. With the included 5Ah battery clipped on, the balance is slightly tail-heavy in a good way—easy to brace against material without fatiguing your wrist. It’s not the lightest combo on the market, but it feels planted. The belt clip is robust and reversible, and the soft bag is serviceable for transport, though I’d choose a hard case if you’re hard on your gear.

The kit is straightforward: tool, 5Ah pack, charger, belt clip, and bag. No bit holder is included; if you rely on onboard bit storage, consider adding the DeWalt accessory that bolts to the base.

Ergonomics and controls

Ergonomics are excellent. The grip contour and rubber overmold give a confident hold without hot spots, even during extended use. The forward/reverse switch has a positive click and sits far enough from the trigger that I didn’t accidentally bump it mid-drive—something that happens with some compact drills. The two-speed gearbox slider is firm without being sticky, and I could switch between low and high one-handed.

The trigger has a broad, linear modulation range. Feathering starts is intuitive, and the motor’s smooth ramp-up keeps bits from walking. Clutch detents (15 positions plus drill mode) are crisp. On light fastening—hinges, drawer slides, outlet plates—the clutch slip is predictable, and I could avoid buried screws or camming out with minimal fuss.

Lighting that actually helps

DeWalt’s three-mode LED remains one of the few drill lights I consider genuinely useful. Mounted at the base, it throws an even cone that doesn’t shadow behind the chuck. The “spotlight” setting turns the drill into a temporary task light with a timed shutoff of up to 20 minutes. That sounds like a novelty until you’re running screws inside a cabinet or working under a sink and don’t want to juggle a separate light. The lower-intensity settings are perfect for close work where glare can be distracting.

Power, speed, and runtime

This is a brushless platform with a two-speed transmission: 0–550 rpm in low for controlled torque and 0–2,000 rpm in high for drilling. In high gear, the drill spins small to medium bits fast enough to clear chips and avoid burning. I pushed a 1-1/2 in. self-feed through SPF studs in low without drama; it’s not a hogger by trade, but it will handle the occasional large-bore job if you’re patient and let the bit do the work. Hole saws up to 3 in. in pine were fine; in hardwoods, keep it to 2-1/8 in. for clean cuts.

The included 5Ah battery is the sweet spot for this tool. It provides the current the motor wants and the runtime most users will need. Over a typical day of mixed work—pilot drilling, driving 2-1/2 in. screws, a dozen spade-bit holes for wiring—I didn’t need to swap packs. Expect around an hour and a half or so to bring a depleted 5Ah back to full on the included charger. If your workflow is non-stop, a second pack is still the best productivity upgrade.

Chuck quality and runout

The 1/2 in. metal ratcheting chuck is one of the standouts. It grips bits securely without needing to death-grip the sleeve, and the ratchet gives a clear “locked” confirmation. I checked for runout with a 6 in. bit at slow speed; my sample showed only minimal visible wobble, better than average for a compact drill. Bit retention was excellent—I didn’t have any slippage drilling into steel with step bits.

A couple of small tips that help with any keyless chuck: seat the bit fully, snug it, then give it a final twist until you hear and feel the ratchet clicks. Also, periodically wipe the jaws clean; dust and oil can reduce grip and mimic runout.

Fastening performance

For driving, low gear and the clutch make this a surgical tool. It sunk cabinet screws flush with consistent depth and drove structural screws into PT lumber without chatter. High gear is snappy for assembly work where speed matters. The motor’s brushless control keeps heat in check, and even after a half-hour of continuous driving, the housing was warm but not concerning.

There’s no electronic assist or “precision” mode; it doesn’t need it. The mechanical clutch is tuned well, and trigger control is smooth enough for delicate tasks. If you need repeatable, low-torque consistency (think brass hardware), take a minute to dial the clutch and you’ll be set.

What it is—and what it isn’t

This is a drill/driver, not a hammer drill. For frequent masonry drilling, you’ll want a hammer-capable model. There’s no auxiliary handle, so if you routinely run big self-feeds or large hole saws in dense material, step up to a heavier-duty drill with a side handle. And while the bag is a nice inclusion, a hard case would better protect the tool and accessories in a work van.

The compact head length shines in real-world use. Working between studs, under shelving, or inside cabinets, the shorter nose got me square to fasteners where longer drills force awkward angles. That compactness does come with the usual trade-off: it’s optimized for speed and mid-range torque rather than brute-force boring.

Noise, vibration, and heat

Noise levels are reasonable for a compact drill—no grinding gear whine, and the brushless motor has a cleaner tone than brushed predecessors. Vibration is low; you can feel the bit engaging, but the handle isolates impact well, so your hand doesn’t buzz after long sessions. The gearbox and motor housing shed heat effectively, and the tool never thermal-limited during typical carpentry and light electrical tasks.

Durability and build

Fit and finish are solid. Molding lines are clean, the rubber overmold is resilient, and the chuck sleeve is metal, not thin plastic. After a few intentional tip-overs on concrete, only minor scuffs showed. Internally, the brushless design means fewer wear items and better efficiency. As with any compact drill, avoid prying on the chuck or using the tool as a hammer; the precision parts will thank you.

Wish list

• Integrated bit holder. The optional clip-on is fine, but a built-in slot would be handier.
• Hard case option. The bag works, but organization suffers.
• A slightly shorter throw on the mode selector would make quick changes even quicker.

These are minor quibbles in daily use, not dealbreakers.

Value

As a kit with a 5Ah battery and charger, it hits a strong value point for pros and serious DIYers. The performance jump over older brushed drills is noticeable: more speed, better runtime, finer control. If you’re already in the yellow battery ecosystem, it’s a clear upgrade; if you’re starting fresh, you’re getting a well-rounded cornerstone tool.

The bottom line

This DeWalt compact drill is fast, comfortable, and capable across the wide middle of drilling and driving tasks. The brushless motor and two-speed gearbox deliver real productivity, the LED system is genuinely helpful, and the chuck inspires confidence. It’s not a hammer drill and it’s not a heavy-duty right-angle borer—but it rarely left me wanting on the jobs most people do every day.

Recommendation: I recommend this drill/driver. It balances power, size, and control better than most, the included 5Ah battery gives it legs, and the ergonomics make it a pleasure to use. If your work involves frequent masonry drilling or oversized boring in hardwoods, pick a tool built for that niche.
