Egadis 36 in. H x 6 ft. W Porch and Deck Railing Kit, Aluminum Railing Kit, Black Textured Powder-Coat Finish Railing System for Outdoor Decks, Porches & Balconies Review
Why I chose this kit
I set aside a weekend to replace a wood guardrail run on a weather-beaten deck and wanted something clean-looking, corrosion-resistant, and not fussy to maintain. The Egadis aluminum railing kit stood out because it’s an all-in-one 6-foot level section with a post, rails, balusters, and hardware for multiple substrates. On paper, it checks the boxes: 6063 aluminum, a textured black powder coat, 36-inch height, a stout 10 mm base plate, and a 200 lb load rating. In practice, it’s a solid, budget-friendlier alternative to the higher-priced modular systems—provided you’re comfortable with basic layout, cutting, and a bit of problem solving.
What’s included and first impressions
My kit arrived well protected; every component was sleeved and separated with foam. Unboxing took time, but everything was present: one post with base cover, top and bottom rails, 15 balusters, a support rod, four brackets, and screws for both wood and masonry. The finish has a fine, textured sheen that hides fingerprints and small scuffs better than smooth paint. The extrusions are straight and true, and the post base plate inspires confidence—at 10 mm thick it feels purpose-built for resisting wobble.
Two quick notes:
- The post is slimmer than a 4x4; it has a more contemporary, streamlined profile. If you’re expecting the chunky look of 4x4 wood, this is not that.
- This is a level kit. For stairs or odd angles, you’ll need different or universal brackets not included here.
Build quality and finish
For the price, the materials quality is good. The aluminum sections are consistent, the welds on the post are tidy, and the balusters fit precisely into the rail pockets. The powder coat is even, with no thin spots on corners. It’s still aluminum with a coating, so treat it like a finished product during assembly:
- Lay components on a moving blanket or cardboard.
- Peel film only as you go and avoid dragging rails on concrete.
- Deburr cut ends and touch up exposed edges to protect the finish.
I had a small cosmetic scuff on one rail end under the protective film that disappeared once installed behind the bracket. Nothing structural, but it validated my decision to unbox carefully and inspect before cutting.
Installation experience
Expect a learning curve on the first section. There’s enough hardware and information to get it done, but the instructions are light on layout guidance and don’t include bracket templates. If you’ve installed railing before, it’s straightforward. If not, plan to work slowly on the first run and you’ll be fine.
My approach:
1. Layout and plumb: I dry-fit post locations, checked for equal section widths, and verified the 36-inch finished height to the top of the rail.
2. Bracket heights: To hit 36 inches finished, I measured from the top of the post base plate to set bracket heights. On my deck, centers landed roughly 2-3/8 inches up for the lower bracket and about 33-1/2 inches for the upper. Yours may vary; take a few minutes to confirm against your rail profile and substrate thickness.
3. Pre-mark and pre-punch: I marked bracket holes on the post, then used a center punch so screws tracked straight.
4. Post anchoring: The included fasteners are serviceable. For wood framing, I opted for structural screws sized for my framing thickness. On concrete or brick, I’d use quality wedge anchors matched to the hole pattern of the base.
5. Rail cutting and baluster assembly: I measured the clear distance between posts (inside face to inside face) and removed roughly 1 inch total from the rail lengths to account for bracket insertion play. I laid the rail pair flat, inserted all balusters into the top rail first, then persuaded the bottom into place with a rubber mallet.
6. Setting sections: I fully anchored one post first, then inserted the rail assembly into the opposite post’s brackets and tapped that post into final position before fixing it down. Composite shims under the base plate help compensate for uneven decking.
7. Support rod: The included support rod adds mid-span stiffness on the 6-foot run. Don’t skip it.
With the first run complete, subsequent sections moved quickly. A careful DIYer can do a few sections in an afternoon; a full perimeter is a weekend project.
Tools I recommend:
- Miter saw with a non-ferrous metal blade (or a fine-tooth blade) and a deburring tool
- Drill/driver, center punch, and good bits
- 2- and 4-foot levels, square, tape, clamps
- Rubber mallet, composite shims, and painter’s tape to protect visible faces
Performance and feel
Once anchored, the railing feels reassuringly solid. There’s minimal play at the post thanks to the thick base plate, and the rail assembly doesn’t rattle or flex under normal use. The 200 lb load rating aligns with typical residential guard requirements. Baluster spacing worked out comfortably under the 4-inch sphere rule on my install after cutting symmetrically from both ends, but always verify spacing and guard height against your local code.
The textured finish looks great in direct sun and doesn’t telegraph minor handling marks. It also complements composite decking and darker trim especially well.
Design flexibility
- Straight runs and 90-degree corners are well supported with the included brackets. For anything off-square, plan on ordering universal angle brackets separately.
- Rails cut cleanly and the baluster system is forgiving as long as you keep your cuts square and distribute material evenly from both ends so spacing stays consistent.
- Because this is a 6-foot module with one post, you’ll need additional kits or posts for longer runs. Mixing and matching sections to hit exact lengths is practical, but measure the whole run before drilling anything.
Maintenance
Aluminum and powder coat make this a low-maintenance choice. A gentle soap-and-water rinse a few times a season keeps it looking fresh. Avoid harsh abrasives and chlorides, especially in coastal environments; a water rinse after salty exposure is good practice. If you expose bare aluminum when cutting, touch up the edge to preserve the finish. There’s no rust to worry about, but oxidation is never your friend.
What I’d improve
- Better instructions: A simple bracket height template and more explicit fastener guidance for different substrates would reduce the learning curve.
- Finish protection cues: The coating is decent, but like any powder coat it can scuff if handled roughly. A larger caution sheet about unboxing and assembly surfaces would help new installers.
- Angle flexibility out of the box: Throwing in a pair of universal angle brackets would make this kit more versatile for decks that aren’t perfectly square.
Practical tips from my install
- Inventory everything before you cut. It’s much easier to swap a part before you’ve modified it.
- Do all your unboxing up front. Familiarity with each piece makes layout faster.
- Mark bracket holes and pre-punch. It keeps screws from wandering on the post surface.
- Dry-fit the baluster assembly before final cuts. Confirm spacing and orientation.
- Protect the finish. Work on blankets, and keep a rubber mallet handy for gentle persuasion.
- Shim posts on uneven decking, then fully fasten. Don’t force a twist into the post to chase level.
Value
Compared to premium modular rail systems, the Egadis kit delivers a lot for the money: a post, rails, balusters, and cross-substrate hardware in one box. You’ll spend more time on planning and layout than with some higher-end systems that include jigs and templates, but once you’ve got a rhythm the cost savings are real. If you’re hiring a pro, it’s still competitive; if you’re DIY-ing, the economics are compelling.
Recommendation
I recommend the Egadis railing kit for homeowners and pros who want a sturdy, modern-looking aluminum guard at a reasonable price and don’t mind doing a bit of layout work. It’s strong, weather-resistant, and genuinely low-maintenance once installed. While the instructions could be more helpful and you’ll want to handle the finish with care during assembly, the finished result is rock solid and clean. If your project includes acute or obtuse corners or stairs, plan for additional brackets or stair-specific sections. For straightforward level runs on decks, porches, and balconies, this kit is an excellent choice.

Creative
Planter-Integrated Railing
Turn the kit into a living railing by attaching custom planter boxes to the bottom rail and between balusters. Use rot-resistant cedar boxes that bolt to the bottom rail and drill drainage holes. The aluminum kit’s 200 lb rating and powder-coat finish mean it will resist moisture and support planters when mounted to a solid surface. Great for small-space herb gardens on balconies or to create a flower barrier on porches. Tips: keep planters shallow to limit weight, use lightweight potting mix, seal wood where it contacts metal.
Pet- and Child-Safe Balcony Panel
Convert the railing into a safety barrier by attaching clear acrylic or perforated metal panels to the inside of the balusters. This closes gaps for small pets and toddlers while preserving sightlines. The kit’s pre-drilled brackets and ability to be cut to custom lengths makes fitting easy for odd-width openings. Use rubber washers and stainless fasteners to prevent rattling and protect the powder coat. Optional: add a removable top rail cover to create a soft touchpoint.
Decorative Privacy Screen Combo
Create a hybrid privacy solution by combining the railing with inset horizontal wood slats or metal mesh between balusters. Install the railing as structural support, then mount thin cedar or composite slats to the inside for a modern, layered look. The textured black finish provides a strong visual frame. This approach works well for porch privacy or to block neighboring views without building a full wall. Include a removable panel option for maintenance access.
Handrail Lighting Upgrade
Use the top rail to conceal low-voltage LED strip lighting for safe, attractive night-time steps and deck edges. Route slim LED channels along the underside of the top rail and run wiring through the post base (drill a service hole into the post base plate if mounting on wood). The aluminum rail helps dissipate heat and provides a clean mounting surface. Good for both safety and ambience — pair with a solar step light for off-grid options.
Freestanding Trellis or Room Divider
Repurpose the kit as a freestanding garden trellis or outdoor room divider by mounting the post base to pavers or a weighted base instead of fixed footings. Add climbing-net ties, horizontal wires, or lattice to encourage vines. The kit’s corrosion resistance makes it suitable for moist garden environments. This is a flexible solution for defining patio zones, supporting climbing roses, or creating seasonal displays.
