Why I reached for this sander

Prepping a couple of occupied remodels pushed me to try the DeWalt cordless drywall sander. I wanted mobility, true ceiling reach without stilts, and dust control that wouldn’t leave a haze hanging in a client’s living room. On paper, this cordless 9-inch setup checks all those boxes: brushless motor, telescoping shaft, articulating head, and a direct Dust Extractor connection with wireless ON/OFF control when paired with a compatible extractor. After several rooms and some patch-and-repair jobs, here’s how it actually performed.

Setup, connections, and the vacuum reality

Out of the kit, the sander assembles quickly. The telescoping shaft locks positively and the head articulation has enough range to track ceilings and transitions without fighting you. Weight is reasonable—about 8.6 lb with a 5Ah battery—but more importantly, it’s balanced. I could hold it vertical for extended ceiling passes without a death grip.

Dust extraction is where two realities exist:
- Paired to a compatible DeWalt dust extractor, the AirLock connection clicks in securely and Wireless Tool Control is excellent. The sander turns the vac on and off, which keeps workflow smooth and saves noise and power between passes.
- If you’re running a non-DeWalt vac, plan ahead for an adapter. The AirLock port isn’t a universal taper. You’ll need the proper AirLock-to-hose adapter to get a sealed, reliable connection. Once adapted, performance is solid, but it’s not plug-and-play with generic hoses.

I’m glad the AirLock interface is quick and tool-free—it’s one of the better connection systems—but I’d love a universal sleeve included in the kit for third-party hoses.

Dust collection and finish quality

With appropriate suction, dust capture is very good. On flats and ceilings with the head fully seated, I could sand joint compound without a visible plume. Edges and outside corners are where any drywall sander will leak a bit; this one is no different. Keep the head flat and let the articulating neck do the work—don’t pry or tilt the pad to “reach” and you’ll keep the shroud sealed and the dust under control.

The 9-inch pad covers ground efficiently and helps blend seams. On taping coats, I ran the speed dial in the middle of its range to avoid swirl marks. For heavy ridges or old texture knock-downs, bumping up speed helps, but too much speed with too fine a grit will create those dreaded halos in raking light. The variable-speed dial is responsive, and the brushless motor never felt like it was hunting or pulsing under load.

Ergonomics and handling

The standout for me is the balance. Cordless drywall sanders can feel nose-heavy once a battery is on board; here, the mass is distributed in a way that keeps the head planted without extra downward pressure from your shoulders. The telescoping shaft adds meaningful reach—I could work standard 8-foot ceilings from the floor and hit the upper third of 9-foot walls by simply changing stance. The articulating head pivots cleanly and tracks well across butt joints and valleys without bouncing.

Vibration is controlled for a drywall sander. You’ll feel it over time on ceilings—this is still an 8-plus-pound tool overhead—but I didn’t experience the tingling hands I’ve had with some corded units.

Power, pads, and technique

The sander accepts 9-inch hook-and-loop discs and works with DeWalt’s soft (DWE7801) and hard (DWE7802) backing pads. That’s a meaningful tuning option:
- Soft pad: better for feathering and finish coats, helps prevent cut lines on crowned seams.
- Hard pad: more aggressive removal for rough patches or flattening high spots.

I started with the soft pad for finish sanding and swapped to the hard pad for a wall that had errant ridges. Being able to tailor the backing pad to the task noticeably improves results.

The brushless motor has more than enough power for compound and typical paint/texture scuff-sanding. If you lean too hard or stall the head at an odd angle, the electronics will cut power briefly. That’s a protection feature, not a defect—ease up, reset your approach, and it resumes. The lesson is to let the pad’s surface area and speed do the work. Keeping the head flat and moving, even at moderate pressure, delivers a cleaner finish faster than muscling it.

Runtime and battery strategy

With the included 5Ah batteries, I averaged around 25–35 minutes per pack depending on speed setting, vacuum suction level, and how aggressively I was removing material. That aligns with the typical 30-minute guidance for this battery capacity. For punch list work and individual rooms, it’s fine. On larger jobs, battery logistics matter:
- Two 5Ah packs keep you moving, but the standard charger won’t catch up if you’re sanding continuously at higher speeds.
- For all-day sanding, a third 5Ah pack or a faster charger helps maintain a true rotation.
- If you already own higher-capacity packs, they buy you more runtime but add weight.

Noise is dominated by the vac. The sander itself is quieter than corded pole sanders I’ve used, which is a welcome change in occupied homes.

Reliability, maintenance, and small annoyances

I didn’t run into any hard failures, but I did trigger overload shutoffs when I got sloppy and wedged the head at steep angles. Keeping the vent areas clean and letting the tool come to a stop before setting it down helps prevent fines from building up around the head and motor. Inspect the backing pad occasionally; drywall dust is abrasive, and a worn hook surface will make discs slip.

A few nitpicks:
- The lack of a universal hose sleeve in the kit adds friction if you’re not on a DeWalt extractor.
- Wireless Tool Control is great, but only if your vac supports it; otherwise you’re back to manual on/off or separate remote switches.
- The 9-inch pad won’t get you into corners. That’s expected, but budget time for hand sanding or a corner sander to finish edges and inside corners.

Where it shines—and where it doesn’t

This cordless sander shines in finished spaces and remodels where cords and hoses become trip hazards and setup time matters. It’s quick from case to wall, captures dust well with a proper extractor connection, and its balanced design reduces fatigue on ceilings and tall walls.

If your workflow depends on universal vacuum compatibility out of the box, or you need continuous, multi-hour sanding with no battery swaps, plan accordingly. It’s a premium tool and expects a compatible ecosystem to unlock its best features.

Bottom line

The DeWalt cordless drywall sander delivers on the core promises: strong dust collection (with the right connection), effective speed control, good finish quality, and excellent balance for overhead work. The brushless motor feels durable, and the articulating head keeps the pad planted across awkward transitions. Runtime on the included 5Ah packs is realistic for room-by-room work, and expanding your battery pool or charger speed turns it into a credible all-day solution.

Recommendation: I recommend this sander for pros and serious remodelers who value cordless mobility and already run (or are willing to adopt) a compatible dust extractor. The AirLock interface and Wireless Tool Control are genuinely useful, and the tool’s ergonomics set it apart. If you rely on a non-DeWalt vac and expect a universal hookup in the box, or if you need uninterrupted, high-volume sanding without battery planning, you may be better served by a corded rig or by budgeting for the correct adapters and an extra battery.
