Why I reached for the DCF860

I’ve been running 20V brushless impact drivers on jobsites for years, and I’m picky about two things: control under load and reliability day after day. DeWalt’s DCF860 impact driver hit my bench for a full rotation of tasks—decking and ledger work, cabinet install, light steel framing, and HVAC brackets—and it quickly became the driver I tossed in the bag first. It’s compact front-to-back, stout in the hand, and fast enough that I rarely felt like I was waiting on the tool.

Power and speed in the right places

On paper, the DCF860 is rated at 2,500 in-lbs of torque, up to 3,800 RPM, and 4,500 IPM. In practice, that lands where a high-torque, 1/4 in. hex driver should: plenty of grunt for large structural screws and smaller lag work, while still controllable for finish hardware.

  • Speed 1 (0–1,800 RPM) is genuinely usable for delicate tasks. I used it for cabinet hardware, pocket screws, and electrical cover plates with minimal cam-out.
  • Speed 2 (0–2,500 RPM) carried most of my day: decking screws, 3–4 in. exterior fasteners, Simpson structural screws, and self-tappers in 16-gauge studs.
  • Speed 3 (0–3,800 RPM) is the “go” gear. I drove 1/4 in. x 6 in. ledger screws into pressure-treated stock and seated them cleanly without heat-soaking the tool. For 3/8 in. lags, it handled starts confidently; I still pre-drilled and finished with a wrench when needed.

The variable-speed trigger is linear and predictable, which matters more than headline torque when you’re near finished surfaces. I could feather screws to just shy of flush and then bump them home without the tool lurching. Combined with the high impact rate, the driver stays engaged with the fastener and reduces walk-off when you’re working at odd angles.

Ergonomics, balance, and size

Bare, the DCF860 is 2.4 lbs and just 4.8 in. front-to-back. That compact nose is a real advantage between joists and inside cabinets. With the XR POWERPACK battery installed, the balance sits right under the trigger hand—no nose dive, no tail-heaviness. It’s easy to keep the bit square overhead and out at arm’s length.

Grip texture is classic DeWalt: secure without being abrasive. The belt hook is included and solid; it holds to a pocket or a lifted belt without fuss. The kit bag is serviceable—nothing fancy, but it swallows the driver, charger, a couple of bit cases, and a second battery if you add one to your kit.

Noise is in the expected range for a high-output 1/4 in. impact driver. It’s not the loudest in the category, and it doesn’t have a harsh mechanical ring. Hearing protection is still a must in confined spaces.

Visibility and the work-light mode

DeWalt lists up to nine integrated LEDs and a 20-minute work-light setting, and the illumination is excellent. The light is evenly distributed around the chuck, so shadows are minimal—especially helpful when you’re trying to find pilot holes in a dark corner. The extended work-light setting is more than a novelty; I used it as a hands-free task light while laying out hinges and marking stud centers. It won’t replace a dedicated work light, but it’s bright enough to be useful and saves an extra trip to the truck.

Chuck and bit changes

The 1/4 in. quick-connect hex chuck locks bits positively, and it holds up under high-torque duty. One note from day one: the bit release collar was stiff out of the box. It never failed to release, but I needed a firm pull with gloved hands. After a couple of days of use and a dab of dry lube, it loosened up to a more comfortable action. If you swap bits dozens of times per day, that initial stiffness is worth knowing about.

The charger recovers a partially depleted pack quickly enough that rotation isn’t disruptive on a one- or two-battery workflow.

Build quality and durability

Overall fit and finish on my sample is good, with tight seams and no rattles. That said, I did handle another unit where the clamshell seam near the front housing sat a hair proud on one side. It didn’t affect function, but on a flagship-priced tool it’s the kind of cosmetic snag that stands out. The rubber overmold has held up to concrete dust, a couple of roof shingle grazes, and general jobsite grime without peeling.

Internally, nothing hints at fragility. I intentionally stalled large fasteners to listen for distress, and the driver simply hammered as designed. No looseness developed at the anvil or chuck during the review period.

Controls and user experience

The 3-speed selector is easy to actuate and stays where you put it; I could thumb between speeds mid-task with winter gloves on. The driver is also TOOL CONNECT chip ready (chip sold separately), which makes sense for crews tracking assets in the field. If you run a mixed fleet, having the option to add location and usage data later is a nice future-proofing touch—even if you never install the chip.

I’d love to see a dedicated precision mode or self-tapping mode in a future firmware, but the three mechanical speed ranges and the good trigger curve covered everything I needed day to day.

What I’d change

  • Slightly lighter action on the bit release collar from the factory would make frequent swaps smoother.
  • Quality control on the clamshell seam could be tightened; minor cosmetic misalignment on high-end tools draws attention.
  • Including the TOOL CONNECT chip in the kit would make the “chip-ready” feature more meaningful out of the box.

None of these are deal breakers, but they’re worth noting if you obsess over the small stuff like I do.
