Ryobi 18V Compact Radio Review

4.4 out of 5

The Ryobi 18V Compact Radio, model P742, has quickly become one of my favorite portable audio solutions for both work and leisure. Featuring Bluetooth wireless technology, USB charging, and a digital AM/FM tuner, this compact and lightweight tool offers an impressive range of functionalities.

One of the standout features of this radio is its seamless Bluetooth connectivity. Pairing my phone with the radio was a breeze, and the connection remained stable whether I was working in the garage or lounging on the back patio. The audio fidelity through Bluetooth was surprisingly good, providing clear and robust sound that filled the room or workspace effectively. This makes it an excellent companion for job sites where you need your tunes but don’t want to fuss with wires.

The USB charging port is another handy feature that I found immensely useful. It’s a 1-amp port, which isn’t the fastest out there but is adequate for keeping my phone topped off while I’m working. This alleviates the need to carry an extra power bank or find an outlet, making the radio even more convenient for on-the-go usage. It’s particularly beneficial during longer projects or camping trips when access to power is limited.

The digital AM/FM tuner is functional, though it has its quirks. FM reception is generally good, especially for local stations, and the digital presets allow for quick switching between favorite stations. However, the AM reception leaves something to be desired. I found that AM stations often came through muffled, and the signal could be inconsistent, particularly when I was around digital equipment. Given the prevalence of FM and Bluetooth sources, this is a minor setback but worth noting if you’re an avid AM listener.

Physically, the Ryobi Compact Radio is both durable and portable. It weighs in at just 2 pounds, making it easy to carry from place to place. The build quality feels robust, living up to Ryobi’s reputation for making durable tools. I appreciated the rugged design, which held up well in my dusty woodworking shop and didn’t show any signs of wear after a few accidental drops. It’s a tough little unit that seems built to withstand the rigors of job sites and outdoor environments.

Battery life on the P742 is impressive, particularly when using the larger capacity 18V batteries. With a mid-volume setting, I consistently get around 8-10 hours of playtime, which is more than enough for a full day’s work. Even when cranked to maximum volume, the radio lasts for about 4 hours, which is quite reasonable given the power output. One minor inconvenience is that the radio tends to drain the battery even when turned off, so I make it a habit to remove the battery if I’m not going to use it for a few days.

The sound quality is generally good, with a surprising amount of bass for such a compact unit. However, pushing the volume past the halfway mark can result in some distortion, which diminishes the listening experience. It’s not a deal-breaker but something to keep in mind if you need high-volume output for larger, noisier environments. I also discovered an equalizer function by holding the mode button, which significantly improved sound quality. This hidden feature was a pleasant surprise and allowed me to fine-tune the audio to my liking.

One thing I would have liked to see is splash resistance. As it stands, the radio is not rated for any sort of water exposure, which limits its utility in certain outdoor settings. Adding a bit of weatherproofing would make it an even more versatile tool, capable of handling everything from beach trips to rainy job sites without worry.

Another minor issue is the lack of a 110V adapter; the radio only runs on batteries. While this isn’t a major drawback given the long battery life, having an AC power option would provide even more flexibility, especially for extended indoor use.

Overall, the Ryobi 18V Compact Radio excels as a portable, multi-functional audio device. Its Bluetooth connectivity, USB charging port, and solid FM reception make it a versatile tool for a variety of settings. The durable build and impressive battery life further enhance its appeal, making it a reliable companion for both work and leisure.

Would I recommend this radio? Absolutely, especially if you’re already invested in the Ryobi One+ ecosystem. The convenience of using the same batteries across multiple tools can’t be overstated. While it has its minor flaws, like the subpar AM reception and lack of splash resistance, the overall performance and utility make it a worthwhile addition to your toolkit. If you’re looking for a compact, durable radio with good sound quality and modern features, the Ryobi 18V Compact Radio is a solid choice.
