Compact tools usually come with compromises, but this Atomic impact driver surprised me from the first few fasteners. It’s genuinely tiny front to back—just under 4 inches—yet it hits hard and stays controllable. Design and ergonomics

The headline feature is the size. Being able to square up to a screw between studs or inside a cabinet without resorting to awkward angles is a real productivity boost. The short nose helps you get closer to corners, and the 3-LED ring surrounds the chuck so you’re not fighting shadows when you’re aiming a fastener in dim spaces.

Weight and balance are good with the included compact POWERSTACK 1.7 Ah battery. The tool feels planted without being nose-heavy, and the smaller battery keeps the profile tight for overhead and in-closet work. The grip shape and texture are comfortable, and the belt hook is sturdy and reversible. I do wish DeWalt had included a bit holder on the base from the factory; you can add one, but out of the box there’s nowhere to stash a second bit.

One note on controls: the forward/reverse rocker sits high on the handle and is easy to reach, but in truly cramped positions I managed to brush it with my thumb and flip directions unintentionally. It didn’t happen often, but it was memorable. Adjusting my grip helped, and being more deliberate about hand placement largely solved it.

Power and driving performance

On paper, it tops out at 1,825 in-lbs of torque, 3,250 RPM, and 3,800 impacts per minute. In practice, that translates to confident driving in most light-to-medium construction tasks:

• 3" deck screws into treated lumber went in quickly without cam-out when I matched speed to the material.
• Structural screws (quarter-inch diameter) seated firmly; the tool hesitated only when I was driving into dense knots or going without proper pilot holes.
• Cabinet installation screws and pocket screws sank clean and controlled, especially in the lower speed settings.

This isn’t a replacement for a big 1/2" impact wrench if you’re routinely driving large lags or long structural fasteners into dense LVL without pilots, but for 80% of the fasteners on a remodel or service call, it has more than enough muscle. The brushless motor feels efficient and consistent, with minimal torque sag as the battery discharges.

Speed modes and trigger control

Three speed ranges plus a well-tuned variable trigger make this driver easy to dial in:

• Low (1): Ideal for delicate hardware, small cabinet screws, and tasks where you want surgical control. It prevents overdriving and strips less in softwood.
• Medium (2): My default for general construction screws and Tapcons. It balances speed and control well.
• High (3): Best for long fasteners, big washers, and when you want to get in and out of dense stock fast.

The trigger modulation is smooth, and the braking is predictable, which helps when you’re trying to stop at flush without burying a head. I’d still recommend clutch-equipped drill/drivers for tasks where precise depth and torque limiting matter, but for an impact driver, this one is impressively controllable.

Lighting and visibility

The 3-LED work light ring is bright and even, and the placement around the chuck reduces the single-shadow problem you see with single-diode lights. In low-light utility rooms and under-sink spaces, I rarely needed an auxiliary task light. The light comes on with the trigger and illuminates the work area cleanly.

Battery and runtime

DeWalt’s compact POWERSTACK 1.7 Ah battery keeps the package light and small, and it delivers strong bursts of power without noticeable sag. Runtime with a 1.7 Ah pack is naturally limited compared to 2.0–5.0 Ah packs. For a morning of service calls, cabinet installs, or finish carpentry, it’ll get you through a reasonable number of fasteners per charge. For all-day framing or deck building, bring a second compact battery or step up to a higher-capacity pack. The included charger is straightforward and gets you back in the game quickly enough during a coffee break.

One benefit of the smaller pack is balance—this driver remains nimble and easy to maneuver in tight spaces, which is the point of a compact impact.

Noise, vibration, and bit changes

Impacts are still impacts; it’s loud at full tilt, so hearing protection is a good idea. Vibration is well managed for the class. The 1/4" hex chuck is a one-handed insert and positive release—bits click in securely and eject cleanly with a pull on the collar. I had no issues with bits walking out or wobbling.

Build quality and durability

Fit and finish are what I expect from DeWalt’s compact line: tight seams, a solid rubber overmold, and no rattles. After a week of site use, it still feels tight, and the anvil shows no abnormal wear. The brushless motor should help longevity, and the ecosystem compatibility is a practical bonus if you’re already on 20V MAX. Warranty coverage is solid: 3-year limited, 1-year free service, and 90-day satisfaction.

The included soft bag works for transport and keeps the kit together, but it’s light protection. If you want more structure or stackability, you’ll probably migrate it into a hard case or modular box.

Where it shines

• Tight spaces: The short nose gets you into corners and between studs where longer drivers struggle.
• Finish and install work: Cabinets, hardware, electrical, HVAC brackets—speed 1 or 2 offers the finesse you want.
• Punch-list and service: The compact battery and low weight make it easy to carry all day.
• General construction: With the high setting, it drives common deck and structural screws briskly.

What could be better

• Direction selector placement: In tight grips, it’s possible to bump the forward/reverse switch and change direction unintentionally. Be mindful of thumb placement.
• Single compact battery: One 1.7 Ah pack is fine for light work, but I’d prefer a two-battery kit for continuous use.
• Soft bag only: Functional, but not protective. Many pros will want a hard case or modular storage.

Tips for getting the most out of it

• Match the mode to the task. Start in medium; drop to low for delicate work and bump to high for long fasteners.
• Use quality impact-rated bits. The driver has plenty of torque; a good bit reduces cam-out and head damage.
• Keep a second battery on hand for longer days. A compact spare or a 2.0–5.0 Ah pack extends uptime without sacrificing balance too much.
• Pilot holes for large lags. You’ll get cleaner drives, reduced splitting, and less strain on the tool.

The bottom line

Power-to-size ratio is where this Atomic impact driver earns its keep. It’s small enough to live in a pouch or slip into tight spots, yet strong enough to handle most of the fasteners I use in day-to-day work. The three speed ranges and smooth trigger give it a degree of finesse you don’t always get in compact impacts, and the 3-LED ring light is genuinely helpful on real jobsites.

It isn’t perfect—the direction selector can be bumped in cramped situations, and one compact battery won’t cover heavy all-day production—but those are manageable trade-offs. Add a second pack and be mindful of grip in tight quarters, and you’ve got a compact driver that feels like a primary, not a backup.

Recommendation: I recommend this tool. If you value a compact footprint without giving up meaningful torque, this driver hits the sweet spot. It excels for installs, service work, and general remodeling, and it holds its own on heavier tasks with sensible technique.
