Gledewen Ladder Rack Ratchet Straps with J-Hook (4 PCS), 1.4" Black Square Tube Mount, 1.5" Wide x 7.5' Long Black Retractable Ratchet Tie Down Strap Roof Rack, 500 lbs Load Heavy Duty, Cargo Buckle Lock Strap Review
Why I switched to retractable rack straps
Loose ratchet straps are fine—until you’re on the side of the road in the rain feeding a frayed tail through a rusty spool. I installed a set of Gledewen retractable rack straps on my truck’s ladder rack and utility trailer to see if I could speed up my tie-down routine and stop misplacing straps. After months of daily use hauling ladders, conduit, and the occasional kayak, here’s how they fared.
What you’re actually mounting
Each unit is a self-contained ratcheting strap housed in a steel body that bolts to your rack. The webbing is 1.5 inches wide and 7.5 feet long, and it retracts into the housing when not in use—no loose tails flapping in the wind. The system is designed to clamp onto 1.4-inch square-tube racks, and hardware is included. There’s a padded ratchet handle, a large thumb release, and a big take-up knob for fast slack removal. The strap terminates in a steel J-hook, and there are two capture points built into the housing so you can hook back to the unit itself for single-point tie-downs.
A few install notes from my bench:
- Measure your rack tubing. On my 1.5-inch crossbars I used thin shims to achieve a firm clamp.
- One housing’s factory holes didn’t line up with my rack’s existing pattern. I marked and drilled new holes—quick fix, but worth knowing.
- A dab of blue threadlocker on the mounting bolts and a rubber isolator between the base and rack quieted vibration and kept everything tight.
Build quality and materials
The webbing feels stout for the stated 500 lb working load, and the Cordura wear pads at the hook end do reduce scuffing against ladder rungs and bar edges. Stitching is tidy and consistent, with double-diamond reinforcement at the business end. The ratchet mechanism is on the heavier side for this class, and the padded handle is easy to grab with gloves on. The J-hooks are robust and have held shape under hard tensioning.
Weather resistance has been solid overall. After exposure to sun and a few weeks of winter grime, the mechanisms still ratchet smoothly with a light spritz of dry lube on the pawls. The webbing hasn’t gone fuzzy at the edges like cheaper straps often do. One caveat: the dye in the webbing bled the first time they got thoroughly soaked. On my white trailer, I ended up with faint bluish streaks where wet straps laid against the sidewall. A pre-rinse in a bucket and letting them dry before reinstallation stopped the problem.
Real-world use: fast, tidy, and secure
The workflow is where these shine:
1. Unhook from the housing.
2. Wrap around your load (ladder rail, lumber stack, kayak).
3. Hook back to one of the housing’s built-in capture points.
4. Spin the big knob to take up slack.
5. Ratchet to full tension. Flip the release to fine-tune when unloading.
6. Pop the hook, and the strap retracts into the housing.
Being able to take up most of the slack with the knob drastically reduces the number of ratchet strokes. The real time-saver is never hunting for straps and never re-threading a tail through a spool. On a typical day I’m strapping and unstrapping ladders a dozen times; these cut each cycle down to seconds.
Tension holds well. I’ve driven long stretches at highway speeds and over rough jobsite roads without noticeable loosening. Using the correct capture point is important—on my first install I absentmindedly hooked to the wrong pin and the strap could shift under a side load. Hook to the designated capture point (the one with a proper keeper), not any random cross-pin on the frame.
Capacity and limits
These are medium-duty tie-downs with a working load limit of 500 lbs per strap. That’s perfect for ladders, conduit, PVC bundles, sheet goods, modest lumber stacks, and recreational gear. I typically use two straps per ladder to avoid yaw on rough roads. They’re not the right tool for securing a motorcycle, a heavy UTV, or anything requiring higher working loads or redundancy beyond WLL and angle considerations. As always, protect webbing from sharp edges with corner guards.
Length at 7.5 feet covers 90% of what I carry on a rack. If you regularly wrap large cargo with big cross-sections, you’ll appreciate the extra reach, but these aren’t meant to be cross-bed truck straps—these are mount-in-place rack straps.
Ergonomics and the “big knob” caveat
The padded ratchet handle is comfortable and the release lever is glove-friendly. The take-up knob is excellent for quickly reeling in slack—but it’s not a torque device. If you try to fully tension a heavy load by reefing on that knob, you’re using it wrong and you can deform its drive interface. Use the knob to remove slack, then finish tensioning with the ratchet handle. That sequence has kept my hardware unscathed.
I did find the hook-capture slot on one housing a bit tight out of the box, making it fiddly to clip quickly. A few light strokes with a file on the inside edge fixed it. Small quirk; easy remedy.
Mounting flexibility and compatibility
- Best fit: 1.4-inch square-tube racks, as advertised. They’ll also bolt to flat tabs if you through-bolt rather than clamp.
- Roof racks and utility caps: Mount them on the outer face of the crossbar so the strap path is straight and doesn’t rub on uprights.
- Trailers: I mounted two units near the rear crossmember on my utility trailer for quick anchor points—no more fishing for straps in the toolbox.
Because the housings are compact, you can position them to avoid interfering with ladders sliding on and off. If you’re mounting near sliding ladder stops, leave two inches of clearance so the handle can fully cycle.
Durability so far
After a season of regular use:
- Webbing: Minimal fuzzing; Cordura pads show scuffs but no cuts.
- Mechanism: Still smooth; a monthly shot of dry PTFE keeps pawls snappy.
- Hardware: No red rust, only light surface oxidation on edges.
- Retraction: Springs haven’t gotten lazy; straps still zip back briskly.
If you park outdoors year-round, I’d consider a quick UV protectant on the webbing in the summer and a rinse after salty winter runs.
What I’d improve
- Wider, more forgiving hook capture slot from the factory.
- Clearer markings on the correct capture point to avoid user error.
- Pre-washed webbing to prevent initial dye bleed on light-colored surfaces.
- Optional stainless hardware kit for coastal users.
None of these are deal-breakers, but they’re worth noting.
Safety tips from the field
- Respect the 500 lb WLL and account for strap angle. Two straps over a ladder and one forward cinch is a safe baseline.
- Use the ratchet for final tension, not the take-up knob.
- Lock the handle fully closed so the pawl seats; check after a mile.
- Keep straps off sharp corners or use corner guards.
- Inspect webbing and stitching periodically; replace at the first sign of cuts or melted fibers.
Value
As a four-pack, the price-to-convenience ratio is strong. Mounting one at each corner of a rack gives you symmetric tie-down options and keeps the systems balanced. Add the long warranty window, and it’s a compelling package for anyone who secures gear frequently.
Recommendation
I recommend the Gledewen retractable rack straps for tradespeople and DIYers who secure light to medium loads on square-tube racks and want to speed up their workflow. They’re quick, tidy, and robust enough for daily ladder duty, conduit bundles, and weekend gear. The retractable design means no more lost straps or knotted tails, and once you mount them, they’re always ready.
You should look elsewhere if you need higher working loads, stainless hardware in a marine environment, or if you’re mounting exclusively to round tubing without fabricating a flat tab. Be mindful of the initial dye bleed on light-colored finishes and use the ratchet—rather than the take-up knob—for final tension.
For my use—daily ladder hauling on a utility cap and general cargo on a small trailer—the time savings and reliability have earned these a permanent spot on my racks.
