Milwaukee 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer Review

2.9 out of 5

After spending several weeks putting the Milwaukee 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer (3019-20PS) to test, I can confidently say that it’s a tool with a lot of potential but significant flaws. This sprayer, designed to eliminate the need for manual pumping, offers adjustable pressure control and a unique interchangeable tank design aimed at preventing cross-chemical contamination. However, its real-world application reveals both strengths and weaknesses.

Upon unboxing the sprayer, I was immediately impressed by its robust design. The harness system is well-thought-out, providing good weight distribution across the shoulders and hips. This is particularly important given that a full 4-gallon tank adds a significant heft. The harness includes adjustable straps and a clip at the top to help balance the load, making it manageable for extended use. The unit also features a handy mixing cup stored under the tank lid, facilitating accurate chemical measurements.

The first task was to test the sprayer with plain water to ensure there were no leaks and to familiarize myself with its functionality. The sprayer offers five different settings, which cover a range of applications from fine mist to a powerful stream. The adjustable pressure knob is intuitive, and the spray wand feels sturdy and well-constructed. On the positive side, the sprayer managed a vertical spray distance of over 20 feet, which is impressive and useful for reaching higher areas.

A significant advantage of this model is the interchangeable tank system. This feature allows users to switch between different chemical solutions without having to clean the tank thoroughly each time, which is a time-saver and helps avoid cross-contamination. Each tank is equipped with easy-carry handles, making it straightforward to detach and attach different tanks.

However, my experience quickly took a downturn. Despite the solid construction and initial performance, the tank began to leak within a few uses. The leakage seemed to originate from the seams at the bottom of the tank, allowing liquid to drip down my back and legs. Not only is this inconvenient, but it also poses a significant health risk when working with chemicals. The problem persisted even after tightening all the screws and ensuring proper assembly.

Another issue emerged with the spray wand. After approximately 80-100 hours of use, the wand started leaking intermittently. This seems to be due to a shut-off valve in the handle that gets stuck, causing the wand to drain whenever it is positioned lower than the backpack. Unfortunately, this component is not readily serviceable, adding to the frustration.

Weight is another consideration. This sprayer is noticeably heavier than other 4-gallon battery-powered backpacks I’ve used. The added weight becomes apparent during prolonged use, and while the harness system mitigates some of the discomfort, it’s still a factor to consider.

Despite these shortcomings, the sprayer did perform admirably when it wasn’t leaking. The adjustable spray settings allowed for precise application, whether I was targeting weeds in a gravel driveway or spot-spraying in flower beds. The pump operates efficiently, and the battery life is commendable, delivering hours of spraying on a single charge.

Assembly and maintenance, however, are not as user-friendly as one might hope. Cleaning the filter to maintain optimal performance requires emptying the tank and disassembling several parts, which can be cumbersome. Additionally, some herbicides seem to clog the filter more often than others, necessitating frequent cleaning.

I reached out to Milwaukee’s customer support regarding the leaking issues. They acknowledged the problem and offered to replace the faulty tank. The replacement tank arrived promptly and seemed to have an improved design. However, after a few weeks of use, the new tank also started leaking, albeit less severely. This suggests that while some improvements were made, the underlying design issues remain.

The concept behind the Milwaukee 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer is fantastic. The interchangeable tank system, powerful battery-operated pump, and range of spray settings make it a versatile tool for various applications. Unfortunately, the execution falls short. The persistent leaking issues, combined with the heaviness of the unit and maintenance challenges, detract significantly from its overall utility.

In conclusion, while the Milwaukee 4-Gallon Backpack Sprayer has some standout features and performs well under ideal conditions, its reliability issues are a significant drawback. For professionals who need a dependable tool for daily use, the recurring leaks and maintenance hassles make it hard to recommend. However, for occasional users willing to deal with potential leaks and the need for frequent maintenance, it might still be a viable option due to its powerful performance and convenient features. Ultimately, Milwaukee needs to address these design flaws to make this sprayer a more reliable choice for all users.
