OCEMY 20 Stage Shower Filter Showerhead Filter for Hard Water with 2 Replaceable Cartridges High Output Filtered Shower Head Water Softener to Remove Chlorine Fluoride, Polished Chrome Review
Why I tried this filter
I’ve been fighting hard water and a persistent chlorine smell in my shower for a while. Between the dry skin, dull hair, and the limescale crust that builds up on fixtures, it was time to see if a compact inline filter could make a dent. I installed the OCEMY shower filter on a standard 1/2-inch shower arm, paired with a regular fixed showerhead, and gave it a few weeks to prove itself.
Build and what’s in the box
The filter housing is a chrome-finished cylinder that sits between your shower arm and your showerhead. It’s larger than a simple coupler, but still tidy: think small soda can rather than a bulky whole-house canister. The threads were clean, the finish blended with my fixtures, and the unit felt solid without being overly heavy.
In the box, I found:
- The assembled housing with one cartridge preinstalled
- A second replacement cartridge
- Teflon tape
- A couple of rubber washers
It’s a small detail, but including tape and washers matters; you don’t have to rummage for supplies mid-install.
Installation and fit
Setup took me under five minutes:
1. Removed my showerhead.
2. Wrapped the shower arm threads with the included Teflon tape.
3. Threaded the filter onto the arm, then attached the showerhead to the filter.
4. Ensured the rubber washers were seated correctly at both connections.
No tools required, and I didn’t need to torque anything down hard to get a seal. If you’re using a handheld shower, the filter can go either between the arm and the hose or between the hose and the head; both positions worked for me, though between the arm and the hose kept the weight off the handheld.
Tip: Run the water for a minute or two on first use to flush out any carbon fines. I saw a faint gray tint for a few seconds, which is normal with new carbon-based cartridges.
Filtration media and what it does
The filter uses a mixed-media approach: KDF-55, calcium sulfite, activated carbon, and some additional layers. In plain terms:
- KDF-55 is effective at reducing chlorine and some heavy metals and holds up well in hot water.
- Calcium sulfite is very good at chlorine reduction, particularly at higher temperatures.
- Activated carbon is excellent for adsorption of certain chemicals and odors, though it’s more effective at cooler temperatures.
This combination is sensible for shower use, where hot water performance is crucial. The cartridge is a standard “universal” size (roughly 2.7 x 2.4 inches), which means you’re not locked into a proprietary replacement. I confirmed that other universal cartridges fit the housing without fuss.
Day-to-day performance
- Chlorine reduction: The difference in smell was immediate. Using a simple DPD chlorine test strip, my pre-filter water registered clearly in the “present” range; post-filter, it dropped to a very faint reading. The subjective effect was just as obvious—no pool-like odor hanging in the bathroom after a hot shower.
- Skin and hair feel: By the second day, my skin felt less tight post-shower, and my scalp wasn’t as itchy. Shampoos lathered more easily, and my hair felt less waxy when air-dried. If you’re accustomed to the squeaky-dry feel of chlorinated, mineral-rich water, this is a noticeable upgrade.
- Limescale and residue: Don’t expect a true ion-exchange softening (this isn’t a salt-based softener), but I saw less residue left on the glass and fewer spots on the fixtures. Wiping down the shower after use felt easier. Over a couple of weeks, there was less crust forming at the base of the showerhead.
- Odor/taste (not that I recommend drinking shower water): No noticeable musty smell—just neutral.
I didn’t measure a meaningful pH change with simple strips, which is fine. The more important and obvious effect here is chlorine reduction and general water feel, which this unit delivered.
Water pressure and flow
I’m picky about pressure, and I didn’t notice a drop. Flow stayed consistent with my existing showerhead. This is a “high-output” style filter with a relatively large cross-sectional area, so it doesn’t choke the line like some compact filters do. Even at hotter temperatures, the flow remained steady, which speaks well of the media choice and internal geometry.
Maintenance and cartridge life
The manufacturer estimates around six months per cartridge, which is a reasonable starting point. In practice, cartridge life depends on your water quality (chlorine levels, sediment, iron). If your water is particularly rough, plan for more frequent changes. The good news:
- Cartridges are easy to swap—unscrew the housing, pop out the old, insert the new, and reassemble with the washers in place.
- The size is standard, so replacements are easy to find.
- Keeping a spare on hand makes sense, especially if your water has visible sediment.
A small suggestion: log the install date on a piece of tape on the housing. If you notice the chlorine smell creeping back or your lathering changes, it’s a cue to replace sooner.
Size, weight, and aesthetics
The filter adds a couple of inches of length to your setup. In a tight shower or with a very low fixed head, that might bring the spray closer to your shoulders than you’d like. On a long, flexy shower arm, the added weight can accentuate sag; if that’s your setup, consider a sturdier arm or install the filter at the wall-to-hose junction on a handheld system.
The chrome finish blended in with my fixtures and didn’t stick out as a bulky aftermarket add-on. Threading stayed smooth after a few disassemblies, and the washers didn’t deform or bind.
What it doesn’t do (or does less of)
- “Softening” vs. conditioning: This filter conditions water by reducing chlorine and some metals and cutting sediment—effects that often feel like softer water. It does not remove calcium and magnesium ions the way a salt-based softener does. If you need true softening for appliances and scale control throughout the home, you still need whole-house treatment.
- Fluoride: The cartridge is marketed to reduce fluoride. In my testing with basic tools, I couldn’t verify a meaningful change. Fluoride removal typically requires specific media (e.g., activated alumina) and longer contact times than a fast-flow shower allows. Consider any fluoride reduction here a bonus at best, not a primary reason to buy.
- Certification: I didn’t see NSF/ANSI performance certifications claimed for this specific model. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work—my experience and simple tests showed strong chlorine reduction—but it’s worth noting if third-party certification is important to you.
- Well water nuances: For well water with high iron or sulfur, expect the cartridge to work harder and potentially expire sooner. Pre-filtration at the source is still the right way to tackle heavy iron or hydrogen sulfide.
Who it’s for
- Renters who can’t install whole-house systems but want a meaningful improvement in shower water quality.
- Anyone sensitive to chlorine smell or who deals with dry, itchy skin and lifeless hair after hot showers.
- Households where fixtures crust over quickly—this won’t stop scale at the source, but it reduces residue and makes cleaning easier.
- People who want standard-sized cartridges and easy maintenance.
Tips for best results
- Use the included Teflon tape and washers, and don’t over-tighten.
- Flush the new cartridge for a minute or two before your first shower.
- Install with the flow direction arrow (if present) pointing correctly.
- If your shower arm is wobbly, reinforce or use the handheld-hose install to avoid leverage on the arm.
- Track your change intervals; let water quality, not just a calendar, guide replacements.
Verdict
The OCEMY shower filter made a clear difference in my daily showers. It noticeably cut chlorine odor, improved how my skin and hair felt, maintained my existing water pressure, and didn’t require tools or special parts to install or maintain. The standard cartridge size is a real advantage—you’re not locked into one brand for replacements—and the included spare is a thoughtful touch.
I recommend this filter for anyone looking for an inexpensive, low-effort upgrade to their shower water. It’s not a substitute for whole-home softening or specialized fluoride treatment, and it lacks formal performance certifications, but as a practical, user-friendly way to reduce chlorine and improve shower comfort, it delivers.

Turn the chrome showerhead housing into a hanging succulent planter. Remove and safely empty the internal cartridge and media (do not use contaminated media in soil), clean and seal the interior, add a drainage layer and a small soil pocket that fits inside the head, then hang with macramé or a short chain. Use a polished cartridge sleeve (clean/unfilled) as a decorative inner cylinder to give a modern industrial look. Quick steps and tips: sanitize metal parts, seal any threads with clear marine epoxy, use succulents or air plants, and mount where occasional misting keeps plants happy.
Portable Pet-Wash Station (DIY)
Create a compact pet bathing rig that uses the filter to give pets softened, low-chlorine water. Fit the filter to a short hose adapter and mount on a folding pet-wash tub or utility sink. Add a hand-held showerhead, a gentle shampoo dispenser, and a hose splitter so you can bypass the filter for rinsing tools. This reduces skin irritation for sensitive animals and makes grooming at home easier. Materials: hose adapter, clamp-on bracket, non-slip tub, and spare cartridges on hand.
Camp / RV Soft-Water Shower
Convert the filter into a portable clean-water shower for camping or RV use. Combine the filter with a 12V quick-connect pump and a small freshwater tank to create a pressurized hot/cold-capable showerhead that still reduces chlorine and metals. Design it to be modular so the cartridge is replaceable in the field. This gives travelers a spa-like rinse while avoiding the heavy smell/residue from campground water.
Industrial Chic Bathroom Sculpture
Collect old showerheads and spent (cleaned) cartridge housings to build a wall-mounted sculpture or backsplash feature. Use the metallic finishes and cylindrical cartridge shapes as repeating elements for a modern, industrial look. Fasten pieces to a wooden or metal backing, secure with threaded fittings, and seal to prevent corrosion. Perfect for a maker-space wall, bathroom focal point, or a salon/spa display.
