Rubbermaid 24-Piece FastTrack Garage Wall-Mounted Storage Kit, 6 Rails and 18 Hooks, Black, for Home/House/Tool/Sports/Equipment/Utility Purposes Review
Why this wall system earned a permanent spot in my garage
I’ve tried pegboards, standalone racks, and a patchwork of hooks over the years. None of them freed up floor space the way the Rubbermaid FastTrack kit did. It’s a rail-and-hook system that spans 24 feet (six 48-inch rails) and comes with a thoughtful mix of 18 hooks. After installing it across two garage walls, I’ve been able to get bikes, ladders, yard tools, sports gear, and folding chairs up off the floor with room to spare—and I can rearrange it in minutes as needs change.
What’s in the kit
The kit includes six steel rails and a mix of hooks that covers most household needs:
- Multi-purpose and utility hooks for bulkier items like ladders, hoses, and hand trucks
- Vertical bike hooks for hanging bikes by the front wheel
- Low-profile twin, compact, and scoop hooks for chairs, rakes, shovels, brooms, and bags
The rails are powder-coated steel with a matching cover that hides the screws for a clean look. Locking hooks are rated to 50 lb and the non-locking hooks to 25 lb; the overall system rating is 1,750 lb when properly anchored. Installation hardware is included for wood framing.
If you eventually want shelves, baskets, or cabinets, the rails accept the broader FastTrack family of accessories. I added a couple of shelves later without needing new rails.
Installation: quick, clean, and predictable
If you’ve ever hung a heavy mirror or TV mount, this will feel familiar. One person can handle it.
My tool list:
- Stud finder, level, tape measure, pencil
- Drill/driver with a bit to pre-drill and drive the included screws
- Socket or nut driver for lag-style fasteners
- Safety glasses
My layout put three rails at about 75 inches off the floor for bikes, ladders, and bulky gear; two rails went below for yard tools and bags; I placed the sixth rail near the door for day-to-day items. That split-height approach keeps long items from tangling and maximizes wall real estate.
Tips from my install:
- Hit studs. The system’s strength comes from anchoring into framing. On 16-inch centers, a 48-inch rail will catch at least three studs.
- Start in the middle. Level the first screw on a center stud, then work outward so you can micro-adjust for a perfectly level rail.
- Pre-plan hook spacing. Set a few mock hooks on the rail on the ground to visualize spacing, especially for bikes and ladders.
- For masonry walls, plan on proper anchors (not included). The rails handle the load; your anchors must, too.
- Keep the rail covers off until everything is tightened and aligned; then snap them on for a clean finish.
From first hole to last cover, my initial three-rail section took about 90 minutes, including measuring and marking. The second wall went faster.
Daily use and organization
The immediate benefit is floor space. With two adult bikes on the vertical hooks, a full-size stepladder, a steel hand truck, folding chairs, and a cluster of rakes and shovels, I still have room to spare on the rails. What stands out is the system’s “move-first, think later” flexibility: hooks slide on, lock, and unlock without tools. When I swapped a mower bag for snow shovels mid-season, it took under a minute to shift hooks around.
A few specifics:
- Vertical bike hooks: They hold securely without wheel slippage, and the offset helps avoid handlebar clashes when mounting two bikes side by side.
- Multi-purpose hooks: These are my most-used for ladders and bulky gear; I’d gladly buy extras to expand that capability.
- Low-profile twin hooks: Ideal for folding chairs and extension cords.
- Scoop and compact hooks: Great catch-alls for bags, small tools, and odds-and-ends that usually pile up by the door.
Because the rails sit off the wall slightly, long-handled tools don’t scrape paint and tend to sit straighter than they do on a bare screw-in hook. The rubberized hook sleeves prevent metal-to-metal clatter and scuffs.
Build quality and capacity
The rails feel overbuilt in the best way—rigid steel with a consistent finish and no sharp edges. Hook hardware engages confidently with minimal play; once locked, there’s no rattle. I deliberately loaded one section with a ladder, a packed golf bag, and a hand truck to test creep or flex. Nothing budged. That’s the advantage of a rail system that spreads load across multiple studs rather than relying on a series of individual wall anchors.
Two things to keep in mind:
- The published weight ratings assume proper installation into studs with the included hardware. Respect those limits; load distribution is your friend.
- Locking vs. non-locking hooks: for heavy or frequently handled items (bikes, ladders, hoses), reach for the locking style whenever you have the choice.
The look and fit-and-finish
Functionally, it’s a garage—looks aren’t everything. But the FastTrack kit does clean up a wall. The covers hide the fasteners and give it a finished, almost built-in look, which makes it easier to keep the area tidy. On one rail, a cover arrived with a minor scuff; I placed it higher where it’s barely visible. If pristine cosmetics are important to you, consider opening and inspecting covers before mounting.
Flexibility and expandability
One reason I prefer a rail system over pegboard is speed. Moving a heavy hook on pegboard often means rethinking the entire pattern. On the FastTrack rail, it’s a quick slide and snap. As my needs changed, I added a shelf and a couple more multi-purpose hooks—both clicked right onto the existing rails without drilling more holes.
If you only need a few hooks, this kit will feel generous. If you have a lot of large items, plan on picking up an extra pack of your favorite hook style. The rails are the backbone; once they’re up, expanding is painless.
What could be better
- More of the “hero” hooks: The multi-purpose and utility hooks do the heavy lifting. The kit includes a useful spread, but I immediately wanted a couple more of those workhorses.
- Rail seams: Six 48-inch rails give you flexibility, but seams require attention. Take your time aligning them so hooks slide smoothly across transitions.
- Covers can scuff: Purely cosmetic, but worth noting—handle the covers carefully during installation.
None of these are deal-breakers; they’re more about planning your setup and expectations.
Who it’s for
- Homeowners who want to reclaim floor space and keep gear accessible
- Households juggling seasonal items like bikes, snow shovels, and lawn tools
- Anyone who prefers to reconfigure storage without redrilling or adding more holes
Who might look elsewhere:
- Renters who can’t drill into studs
- Folks needing small-parts organization (bins and cabinets are a better fit)
- Commercial shops that require industrial pallet-capacity storage
Practical setup ideas
- Stagger rails: Place a high rail for bikes and ladders, and a low rail for yard tools. You can hang long-handled tools so the heads sit above the lower rail while handles rest below—clean and compact.
- Pair hooks: Two compact hooks spaced a foot apart make a great resting place for wide items like leaf blowers.
- Seasonal rotation: Dedicate a section for seasonal “grab-and-go” gear and move off-season tools higher or to less prime real estate.
- Label zones: A few vinyl labels on the rail covers help everyone return items to the same spot.
The bottom line
The FastTrack kit hits the sweet spot: strong, expandable, and genuinely easy to live with. Installation is straightforward, the hardware feels solid, and the ability to rearrange hooks without tools keeps the system from becoming a static fixture you outgrow. It turned my jumbled wall into a versatile storage zone and, more importantly, gave me my garage floor back.
Recommendation: I recommend the Rubbermaid FastTrack kit. It delivers serious load capacity when installed into studs, the hook assortment covers most household needs, and expansion is simple if your storage grows. If you’re ready to get bulky gear off the floor and you want a system you can reconfigure in minutes, this is a dependable, no-fuss choice.
