A smarter way to light the dark corners of a home

I’ve been trying rechargeable under-cabinet bars on and off for years, and most of them fall into the same traps: flimsy housings, finicky motion sensors, and dim light that looks good in photos but not on a countertop. The Gritin under‑cabinet lights were a pleasant surprise. They’re compact 10.2-inch bars that strike a useful balance between brightness, adjustability, and ease of use, and they avoid most of the annoyances that plague similar lights.

Build and design

Each bar is a mix of aluminum alloy and ABS. The aluminum shell gives the light a sturdier, more premium feel than the all-plastic alternatives I’ve tried, and it helps with heat dissipation during long “always-on” sessions. The diffuser does a good job of evening out the 84 LEDs—no distracting hotspots or visible LED dots on the counter. The silver finish blends in under my white cabinets and doesn’t draw attention. At 10.2 inches, each bar is compact enough for narrow cabinets and shelves, though I wouldn’t mind a longer size option for continuous runs.

Magnets are integrated into the back of each bar. They snap firmly to the included adhesive-backed iron plates, which I stuck to painted wood and melamine with no trouble. The hold is strong; I can slide a bar side-to-side to fine-tune alignment, but it doesn’t shift during everyday use. Popping a bar off for charging is as easy as lifting from one end.

Installation tips

Setup is simple: clean the mounting surface, stick the iron plates where you want the lights, and click the bars in place. A small tip that saved me time: make a quick paper or cardboard template to align plate spacing. Because the adhesive is strong, you’ll want to get placement right the first time, especially under cabinets where you might only have a small margin between trim and backsplash. If you’re installing on textured or dusty surfaces, take a moment to degrease and let it dry; the adhesive bonds better.

Since they’re magnet-mounted, you can also press these into service as portable work lights. I temporarily propped one inside a cabinet while installing hardware—it provided bright, directional task lighting and then snapped right back to its home strip.

Controls and modes

There are four modes: off, night sensing (motion-activated only when the room is dark), daytime sensing (motion-activated regardless of ambient light), and always on. This is a thoughtful lineup and covers most scenarios:

  • Night sensing is great for bedrooms, hallways, and closets where you only want light when it’s dark.
  • Daytime sensing is perfect under kitchen cabinets, where counters can be shadowed even in daylight.
  • Always on is helpful during food prep or projects when motion-based behavior is more distracting than helpful.

Brightness can be set in five steps (10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) or adjusted via stepless dimming with a long press. Color temperature toggles between warm (3000K), neutral (4500K), and cool (6000K). I used warm in the evening for a cozy feel and cool for daytime tasks; neutral is a nice compromise that doesn’t tint food or paper oddly.

The buttons are tactile and straightforward. Importantly, the light doesn’t force you to cycle through a long sequence to get where you need; switching between modes and temperatures is quick. Motion holds the light on for about 20 seconds, which is just long enough for most cabinet tasks. If you’re still moving around in the sensing area, it stays on.

Motion sensor performance

The motion sensor is better than most in this price range. In my kitchen, it reliably triggers from about 8–10 feet with a wide angle—walking up to the counter always turns the lights on, but passing through the room several feet away doesn’t cause false triggers if I orient the bar with the sensor toward the work area. Under a shelf in a hallway, the night mode only kicks in when ambient light is truly low, though in dim afternoon light it can sometimes err on the side of turning on. Personally, that’s preferable to a light that refuses to wake up when you need it.

If you find they trigger a little too easily in certain spots, try rotating the bar so the sensor points slightly away from room pathways, or switch to night mode to avoid daytime activations.

Light quality and brightness

For a bar this size, it’s impressively bright at the top setting—enough to prep food on a 2–3 foot stretch of counter without needing overhead lights. At 50–75% brightness, I found the light gentle on the eyes but still functional for chopping and reading recipes. The diffuser provides even, shadow-free illumination directly underneath, which is the whole point of under-cabinet lighting.

The three color temperatures behave as expected: 3000K warms up wood tones, 4500K is balanced and flattering for most tasks, and 6000K is crisp and high-contrast for detail work. I don’t have a measured CRI number, but colors looked natural enough for everyday use. If you’re doing color-critical work (art, photography), you’ll still want high-CRI fixtures, but for kitchens, closets, and shelves, these are more than adequate.

Battery life and charging

Each bar has a built-in 1800 mAh battery charged via USB‑C. Gritin includes two USB‑C cables in the box. Charging is straightforward and there’s a status indicator to show when it’s done.

Battery life depends on brightness, mode, and how busy the area is. As a rough guide from my usage:
- Kitchen, daytime sensing, medium brightness: about a week between charges with regular use throughout the day.
- Closet, night sensing, medium brightness: well over a month between charges.
- Always on, maximum brightness: roughly 8 hours, which tracked with the spec.

The balance here is good: you avoid cords and hardwiring, but you’ll need to build charging into your routine for high-traffic areas. Because the bars pop off the magnets in a second, charging isn’t a hassle. If you want to minimize charging frequency, stick to night sensing and moderate brightness.

What could be better

No product is perfect. A few nitpicks after living with these:

  • Length options: 10.2 inches is versatile, but a longer variant would reduce the number of bars needed for continuous runs.
  • Day/night threshold: in dim rooms, night mode can feel a touch eager. It’s not a deal-breaker, but true ambient light calibration would be welcome.
  • No linking or remote: there’s no way to control multiple bars simultaneously or add smart-home triggers. That’s fine for simplicity and battery life, but worth noting if you’re chasing a more integrated setup.

Where they shine

  • Under-cabinet task lighting without hardwiring
  • Walk-in closets and linen closets for automatic, targeted light
  • Pantry shelves and storage cabinets where wiring would be overkill
  • Hallways or stairways for motion-activated night guidance
  • Workbench or hobby tables as a rechargeable task light you can reposition

Pros

  • Solid build with aluminum housing and strong magnets
  • Bright, even output with a useful diffuser
  • Three color temperatures plus five brightness levels and stepless dimming
  • Four sensible modes, including day and night motion sensing
  • Reliable motion detection with wide coverage
  • USB‑C charging and long runtime in sensor modes
  • Quick, renter-friendly installation

Cons

  • Only one length available
  • Night-mode threshold can be a bit sensitive in dim rooms
  • No multi-light syncing, remote, or smart integration

The bottom line

The Gritin under-cabinet lights hit the sweet spot for people who want reliable, adjustable lighting without committing to hardwired strips. They’re bright enough for real tasks, the sensors behave predictably, and the controls are simple. Most importantly, they disappear into the background—showing up when you need them and staying out of the way when you don’t.

I recommend these lights. They offer excellent everyday usability, thoughtful features (especially the dual motion modes and adjustable color temperature), and a clean installation story. If you need a longer continuous run or advanced smart controls, you’ll want to look elsewhere. For everyone else who just wants practical, great-looking light in dark spots around the home, this two-pack is an easy win.
