Ryobi Dual Bladed Trimmer Head (2 PACK) Review

2.6 out of 5

The Ryobi Dual Bladed Trimmer Head offers a promising design aimed at enhancing the cutting capabilities of most cordless or hybrid string trimmers. That's why I was particularly keen to see how it performed in my yard, which is often a battleground against thick grass and stubborn weeds. However, the journey with this tool has been a mixed bag, revealing both its potential and significant drawbacks.

Design and Installation

The first thing you'll notice about the trimmer head is its lightweight plastic construction. Installation is straightforward and user-friendly, easily attaching to my existing Ryobi trimmer without any need for special tools or extensive know-how. The operator's manual is clear and concise, which is a plus for those who are not particularly mechanically inclined.

Performance

Once installed, I was eager to see how well the dual serrated blades could handle my overgrown backyard. Initially, the tool performed admirably, slicing through thick patches of grass and weeds with relative ease. The serrated design of the blades seemed particularly effective in dealing with more fibrous vegetation, and I was pleased with how quickly I could clear a significant portion of my yard.

However, the honeymoon period was short-lived. After about 15 minutes of use, I noticed a decrease in performance. Upon inspection, I found that one of the plastic posts holding the blade had broken off, causing the blade to detach. Given that this was a brand-new attachment, I was quite disappointed.

Durability Issues

The primary Achilles' heel of this trimmer head is its durability. The plastic housing and posts are not robust enough to handle the rigors of regular yard work. Even with careful use, avoiding hard surfaces and concrete, the plastic components tend to wear out quickly. This is particularly concerning because replacement parts, such as the posts, are not available separately. This design flaw effectively forces users to purchase an entirely new head, which is neither economical nor practical.

On several occasions, the blades would pop off during use, sometimes launching across the yard, which is both frustrating and potentially dangerous. The plastic posts tend to break easily, especially when the blades come into contact with anything more substantial than grass and light weeds. This lack of durability makes the tool unreliable for heavy-duty yard work, contrary to its intended purpose.

Usability

Despite its flaws, the trimmer head does have some redeeming qualities. It is incredibly easy to use and install, and when it works, it works well. For small, routine trimming tasks, it can be quite effective. The dual blades cut through vegetation more efficiently than traditional string trimmers, making it a good option for those who need to tackle a moderately overgrown yard quickly.

However, the tool's propensity to vibrate excessively when in use is another downside. The vibrations can make it uncomfortable to hold for extended periods, even when wearing gloves. This issue seems to stem from the imbalance created when one of the blades inevitably breaks or detaches, further complicating the user experience.

Maintenance and Cost

The maintenance required for this tool can be quite cumbersome. Due to the fragile nature of the plastic components, frequent checks are necessary to ensure everything is intact before each use. The cost of constantly replacing the entire head each time a plastic post breaks adds up quickly, making it an expensive accessory in the long run.

Recommendations

In conclusion, the Ryobi Dual Bladed Trimmer Head is a tool with great potential that is unfortunately let down by its lack of durability. While it is easy to install and initially performs well, the frequent breakages and the need to replace the entire head make it a poor investment for anyone looking for a reliable, long-term solution. For light, occasional trimming, it might suffice, but for regular yard maintenance, it falls short of expectations.

Given my experience, I would not recommend this tool unless Ryobi addresses the durability issues. The concept is excellent, and when it works, it works well. However, the frustration and cost associated with its frequent breakdowns make it a less-than-ideal choice for most users. If you are looking for a more reliable and durable solution, you might be better off exploring other options.
