White vinyl picket gate kit, 3 ft high with a 36 in gate opening and a 51-3/8 in overall width including wings, designed to mate with Baskenridge fence panels. Made from recycled PVC, the kit installs by securing extended posts into the ground (gravel or concrete can be used for added stability) and requires no painting or staining.
Zippity Outdoor Products 3ft H x 4.2ft W (1 Gate) No Dig Zippity Baskenridge Gate Kit, White Vinyl Picket Fence Gate Kit for Baskenridge Fence Panels, Gate for Backyard, Patio, Outdoor, & Garden Fence, ZP19038 Review
I put the Baskenridge gate kit to work separating a patio from a small garden and walkway. I wanted something clean-looking, low maintenance, and quick to install without committing to a full concrete-and-wood build. After several weeks of use and a few tweaks, here’s how it actually performs.
What you’re getting
This is a 3-foot-tall white vinyl picket gate with two short “wings” that anchor the assembly and align with the matching Baskenridge fence panels. The gate opening is 36 inches wide; the overall width including the wings is 51-3/8 inches. That measurement matters more than most product photos suggest—plan for it. The vinyl is made from recycled PVC and, as you’d expect from vinyl, it doesn’t need paint or stain.
Out of the box, the kit includes the gate leaf, posts/wings, caps, and basic hinges and latch. It’s intended to be set in the ground—using gravel or concrete for stability—rather than surface-mounted.
Installation: simple, but plan it
Assembly is straightforward if you’re comfortable with light DIY.
What I used:
- Tape measure, string line, level
- Cordless drill/driver and bits
- Earth auger for a drill (or post-hole digger)
- Crushed gravel and fast-setting concrete
- Rubber mallet and a hand saw/miter saw (for a minor trim cut)
Layout is the critical step. Because the finished width is 51-3/8 inches, I snapped a line and marked hole centers to get my spacing precise. I bored two holes, each roughly 8–10 inches in diameter. In clay soil, just tamped gravel might be enough, but I opted for concrete to tame post sway.
The assembly goes together with interlocking rails and pickets, and the vinyl cuts cleanly if you need a tiny adjustment to clear a foundation lip or paver. I trimmed one wing by about a half inch to center the gate over my walk.
Hanging the gate was the only fiddly part. The provided hinges are compact, which limits how much “adjust” you can get after mounting. I set the leaf with a nickel of gap at the latch side, shimmed the bottom for a consistent reveal, and drove the screws. Expect to budget a little time to get the leaf square and the swing smooth.
Total time solo: about 2.5 hours including digging and concrete. Assembly without concrete would be faster, but you trade speed for rigidity.
Build quality and hardware
The vinyl components themselves look tidy—no sharp flashing or mismatched whites—and they’re light, which makes assembly easier. That lightness also means some flex. The posts aren’t structural in the way a wood 4x4 is, and you feel that if you push laterally on the wings. Concrete footings help a lot; a gravel-only install in soft soil will feel springy.
The hinges and latch are utility grade. They work, but they’re light-duty and small. I could flex the gate leaf enough with one hand that the stock latch felt marginal, especially thinking about regular use or kids leaning on it.
Two improvements made a tangible difference:
- I swapped the hinges for 6-inch stainless strap hinges and added a third hinge centered between the top and bottom. That distributed the load and reduced bounce.
- I replaced the latch with a self-closing, lockable gate latch. It’s better ergonomically and more secure.
With those changes, the gate opens and closes with a reassuring feel. If you’re planning frequent use, just budget for upgraded hardware up front.
Everyday use
Once set and tuned, the gate has been pleasant to live with. The swing is light, the latch lines up, and the picket spacing provides a classic look that blends in with plantings. It’s ideal as a visual and physical cue for a transition area—patio to yard, garden entrance, side yard path—without feeling bulky.
For pet containment, it’s effective for small and medium dogs that aren’t determined bulldozers. A large, enthusiastic dog throwing its weight at the panel will reveal the system’s limits, especially without concrete-set posts. For toddlers, it’s a helpful barrier, but the stock latch is too easy to manipulate; a childproof latch upgrade or a latch placed on the far side is the safer play.
Performance in weather
Vinyl’s promise is low maintenance, and so far that holds. Dirt rinses off with a hose, and there’s no paint to chip. In hot sun, the material flexes a touch, but not enough to affect the swing or latch.
If you live in a freeze–thaw region, treat the installation like a real fence post: dig below frost depth where practical and set the posts in concrete or at least gravel with excellent drainage. Shallow, tamped-only posts are likely to heave and put your latch out of alignment. In very cold snaps, vinyl can get more brittle, so avoid impacts and keep the leaf clear of snowbanks.
Sizing and compatibility
Two dimension points to emphasize:
- Gate opening: 36 inches. That’s standard, but make sure it meets any clearance needs for wheelbarrows, mowers, or accessibility.
- Overall width: 51-3/8 inches including wings. If you’re dropping this between two fixed structures, confirm you have the space or be prepared to trim a wing.
The kit is designed to pair with the Baskenridge fence panels. If you already have those, integration is seamless. On its own, the gate and wings can stand as a passage within landscaping, but you’ll want those posts set well to avoid racking.
What it’s good at, and what it’s not
Strengths:
- Clean, classic look with zero finishing required
- Lightweight parts make solo installation viable
- Vinyl is truly low-maintenance and easy to clean
- The system is easy to cut and customize for slight irregularities
- Environmentally friendlier material story with recycled PVC
Limitations:
- Light-duty hardware out of the box; hinges and latch are the weak links
- Posts have noticeable flex if not set in concrete
- Not a security solution; more decorative and directional
- Cold climates demand proper footings to avoid heave and misalignment
Tips to get the most out of it
- Upgrade the hardware. A pair (or trio) of robust, stainless strap hinges and a self-latching, lockable latch elevate the feel and longevity.
- Set posts in concrete. Even a shallow bell-shaped footing dramatically reduces sway.
- Mind the dimensions. Lay out the 51-3/8-inch total width and gate swing clearance before you dig.
- Add a third hinge for high-traffic use. It resists sag over time.
- Inventory parts before you start. It’s a simple kit, but it’s worth confirming counts so you’re not pausing mid-install.
Who should choose this
- Homeowners looking for a neat, decorative gate to define spaces around patios, gardens, or side yards.
- Pet owners with small to medium dogs, as a light containment solution.
- Anyone who wants a clean white picket look without painting, staining, or dealing with splinters.
Who should look elsewhere:
- Those needing a robust security gate, heavy-duty livestock control, or a barrier for large, energetic dogs that challenge fences.
- Installations that can’t accommodate the 51-3/8-inch overall width without trimming.
Pros and cons at a glance
Pros:
- Attractive, classic aesthetic
- Low maintenance; no paint or stain required
- Simple, forgiving assembly
- Easy to customize with basic tools
- Pairs neatly with matching fence panels
Cons:
- Stock hinges and latch are undersized
- Requires concrete footing for best stability
- Not suited to heavy-duty or high-abuse scenarios
- Light flex in posts and rails
Recommendation
I recommend the Baskenridge gate kit for light-duty, decorative applications where aesthetics and low maintenance matter more than brute strength. With upgraded hinges and latch and posts set in concrete, it becomes a reliable everyday gate for patios, gardens, and side yards. It’s not the right choice if you need serious security, expect rough treatment, or want the rigid feel of a wood-and-steel assembly. For the majority of residential “keep the dog off the beds and define the space” use cases, it’s a friendly, good-looking solution that’s easy to live with—and easier to install than most alternatives.

Picket Gate Potting Bench
Turn the gate into a weatherproof potting bench backboard: mount the gate horizontally or vertically onto a simple 2x4 frame, add a shelf across the lower wings for soil and pots, and screw on small PVC hooks to hold hand tools. The white, recycled PVC surface wipes clean and won’t rot, and the kit’s 51-3/8" width gives you a stable working area. Use gravel or concrete feet if you want a freestanding unit.
Garden Entrance Arch
Create a charming garden entrance by building a short arch or trellis over the gate and using the gate as the door. The gate’s 36" opening and 3ft height are ideal for a quaint path entrance. Attach lightweight lattice or cedar posts to the vinyl posts, train climbing vines (clematis, sweet pea) up the trellis, and keep the low-maintenance white pickets as a focal point.
Modular Pet Playpen
Use one gate kit as a locking access panel within a larger pet playpen composed of multiple panels (or pair with fencing panels). The 36" opening provides easy human access while the low-maintenance recycled PVC stands up to wet weather and dog scratching. Design segments so the gate becomes the convenient entry/exit for feeding, cleaning, or leash training.
Event Photo Backdrop / Signboard
Repurpose the gate as a decorative backdrop for photos, parties, or signage: lean or mount the gate vertically, drape string lights, garlands, or seasonal décor across the pickets, and attach removable wooden signage to the wings. The neutral white makes a great canvas for colors and florals, and the lightweight kit is portable for pop-up events.
