Why I brought the Ultty tower fan into my home

Summer crept in early this year, and my apartment needed better air movement without the clatter of box fans or the bulk of a window unit. I also wanted cleaner air during wildfire season. That’s what led me to the Ultty tower fan—part bladeless fan, part H13 HEPA air purifier—promising a compact footprint, quiet operation, and enough flexibility for both bedroom and living room use. After several weeks of daily use, it’s earned a steady spot in my rotation, with a few caveats worth noting.

Setup and design

Out of the box, setup was painless: attach the base, plug in, and it’s ready. The footprint is small, and the column is lighter than it looks, so moving it from room to room is easy. The build quality feels solid enough for the category, with a stable base that resists easy tipping.

This model is shorter than some tower fans and true Dyson-style towers. On the floor, the airflow sits at a lower height; it’s much more effective positioned on a dresser, sideboard, or low table. The top portion of the oval is where most of the air exits, which further rewards an elevated placement if you want the breeze at head or bed level.

The head tilts forward and back by about 30 degrees and oscillates 90 degrees. The tilt adjustment is useful, though limited; I often wanted a bit more range when the fan was on a low stand.

Controls and modes

Controls are straightforward. You get a touch panel on the base and a remote (coin cell CR2025) with the same functions: three modes and nine speeds, oscillation, and an 8-hour timer. The panel is responsive and the display dims automatically after a couple of minutes, which I appreciated in the bedroom. There is an audible beep when changing settings; I couldn’t find a mute option.

  • Modes: Normal, Natural (a gentle up-and-down speed pattern), and Sleep (prioritizes lower speeds with a dim display).
  • Timer: 1–8 hours in 1-hour increments.

The remote is the way to go once you’ve found a good placement since the touch controls sit low. Range and response were reliable from across the room.

Airflow and cooling performance

Fan performance is all about steady, smooth airflow. The Ultty delivers a clean, non-buffeting breeze that doesn’t feel choppy or drying—one of the reasons I like bladeless designs for long sessions.

  • Coverage: In my 200-square-foot bedroom, the fan easily circulated air on speeds 3–5, and the 90-degree oscillation helped avoid hot spots. In my open plan living area (around 300 square feet), speeds 6–9 were more appropriate if I wanted to feel airflow across the room.
  • Height and angle: Because the effective airflow comes from the upper section, floor placement feels underwhelming for people seated or lying on a bed. Elevating it by 18–24 inches makes a big difference. The limited 30-degree tilt is just enough for aiming, but you can’t dramatically change the throw angle.
  • Cooling expectations: It won’t replace an air conditioner for heatwaves, but it excels at moving air quietly and evenly, making rooms more comfortable and less stuffy.

I also like that the first three speeds are genuinely gentle—they’re ideal for sleep and background use—while the top three speeds can push a surprising amount of air, albeit with a noticeable rise in noise.

Air purification performance

The built-in H13 HEPA filter is the reason I picked this unit over a fan-only tower. With windows open during smoky days, I noticed a reduction in fine dust and that “stale” smell over a few hours of runtime. In a pet-friendly home, it helped reduce light dander on surfaces and that vague morning stuffiness.

Rooms up to 320 square feet are the sweet spot. The unit doesn’t include a sensor-driven auto mode or air-quality readout—something pricier purifiers offer—so you’ll need to choose speeds manually. For continuous cleaning, I found speed 3–4 quiet enough for all-day use and effective for a bedroom. During high-pollen or smoke days, bumping to 5–6 for a couple of hours cleared the air faster, then I’d step it back down.

Filter access is simple, and replacements are widely available. How long the filter lasts will depend heavily on your environment; during a dusty, smoky week, mine darkened quickly. Plan on 3–6 months under typical conditions and more frequent changes if you run it hard during wildfire season.

Noise and comfort

At lower speeds, the Ultty produces a soft, “whooshing” airflow with very little mechanical tone—pleasant for sleeping or working. Using a phone-based SPL app at one meter, I saw roughly mid-30s dBA on speed 2–3 in my quiet bedroom at night. That aligns with how it feels: present but unobtrusive.

As you climb past speed 5, noise rises and the character becomes more prominent. On 8–9, it’s clearly audible, closer to a typical tower fan’s output. The difference is that the sound remains smooth rather than choppy. I could still take calls with it running at mid speeds; for video calls, I kept it at 4–5.

Day-to-day use

  • Bedroom: Sleep mode with oscillation and a 2–4 hour timer became my nightly default. The display dimming and gentle ramping work well in low light. I wish the tilt allowed a deeper downward angle for bed-level airflow when placed on a tall dresser.
  • Home office: For long desk sessions, the Natural mode is surprisingly comfortable, avoiding the “constant blow” fatigue of a fixed speed.
  • Living room: Oscillation at higher speeds helps a lot, especially in the late afternoon when hot air stagnates. If you’re watching TV, keep it off-axis; direct airflow at high speeds can be distracting.

The unit’s lightweight build made it easy to relocate, and cleaning the exterior is simple—just wipe with a microfiber cloth. There are no grills or blades to disassemble.

Maintenance and filters

  • Filter: H13 HEPA cartridge; easy to swap. Expect 3–6 months in average conditions, less during heavy smoke or high-dust periods.
  • Availability: Replacement filters are easy to find; keep one on hand if you rely on it during seasonal spikes.
  • Cleaning: No washable HEPA stage here. Stick to replacing the filter and wiping the intake/exhaust surfaces.
  • Remote battery: It uses a CR2025 coin cell. Not as convenient as AA/AAA, but replacements are inexpensive; I keep a spare in a drawer.

What could be better

  • Height and tilt: The combination of shorter tower height and limited tilt can make placement tricky. It shines when elevated; on the floor, it’s less effective for bed or sofa height.
  • Top-heavy airflow: Most airflow is from the upper section of the oval. It’s fine once you position it right, but the effective output area isn’t the whole ring, which may surprise some users.
  • High-speed noise: While smooth-sounding, the top three speeds are loud enough that you’ll notice them in quiet rooms. Low and mid speeds are excellent; plan to use higher speeds for short bursts or in noisier spaces.
  • No smart features: There’s no app, air-quality sensor, or auto mode. I didn’t miss them in the bedroom, but if you want set-and-forget purification, look elsewhere.
  • Beep muting: The confirmation beep can’t be silenced, as far as I can tell.

Who it’s for

  • Great fit: Bedrooms, nurseries, and home offices up to medium size; anyone who wants a single device that quietly circulates air and captures fine particles; homes with pets or seasonal smoke; people who prefer the safety and look of bladeless designs.
  • Not ideal: Large, open spaces where you need strong airflow at very low noise; users who want deep tilt adjustment; those who require smart sensors, auto modes, or app control; anyone expecting AC-like cooling.

Recommendation

I recommend the Ultty tower fan as a balanced, value-friendly combo for small to medium rooms where quiet airflow and basic HEPA purification matter more than smart features or brute-force cooling. It’s easy to live with, genuinely quiet at low and mid speeds, and the oscillation plus nine-step control make it adaptable across rooms and seasons. The compromises—limited tilt, best performance when elevated, and rising noise at the highest speeds—are manageable with thoughtful placement. If you want a simple, safe, good-looking fan-purifier that does the fundamentals well without app complexity or premium pricing, this one is a solid pick. If you need deep tilt flexibility, ultra-quiet output at maximum airflow, or sensor-driven automation, you’ll be happier stepping up to a higher-end alternative.

Aromatherapy Sleep Pod

Turn the ULTTY into a bedside sleep pod that gently circulates scented, purified air. Add a small ultrasonic diffuser or a replaceable scent pad holder hidden in the base or filter access area, integrate a soft dimmable LED strip under the unit for ambient lighting, and program nightly schedules with the remote/timer. Use calming essential oil blends, label pads for rotation, and make the scent holder removable for cleaning. Result: a quiet, safe bedside device that combines HEPA-cleaned air, a gentle breeze, and tailored aromatherapy for improved sleep.

Vertical Plant Microclimate

Convert the tower into a vertical microclimate for seedlings or air plants. Attach 2–3 lightweight shelves or custom-molded brackets around the tower to hold pots, add a shallow humidity tray at the base, and use the fan's low-speed setting to provide steady, gentle air circulation. The HEPA function helps reduce spores and pests. Finish with a decorative wrap or water-resistant paint. Ideal for growing herbs in small apartments or creating a living display that benefits from improved air exchange.

Interactive Light & Air Sculpture

Make an eye-catching art piece by customizing the tower's exterior: replaceable snap-on panels with laser-cut patterns, paint or decoupage, and a synced RGB LED strip that changes color with fan speed (use a small microcontroller and sound/speed sensor). Add a motion sensor to trigger wind/light effects when someone approaches. The bladeless fan is safe for public displays and provides an engaging multi-sensory installation for home, studio, or gallery spaces.

Pet Comfort & Grooming Station

Build a pet-safe cooling/grooming station using the bladeless fan's smooth airflow. Mount the tower on a low, stable platform with non-slip surface, add a detachable grooming arm and cushioned mat, and incorporate a removable catch tray for loose fur. Use low speeds and the purifier to reduce dander and hair floating around. This creates a calm, safe drying/cooling area for small pets and can be customized with washable covers and storage pockets for brushes and treats.
