4.5 out of 5

Why I tried the OKQ 2x2 panels

I’ve been gradually phasing out aging fluorescent troffers in a small office and a couple of study rooms, aiming for something cleaner-looking, quieter, and more controllable. The OKQ 2x2 LED panels promised high efficacy, selectable output and color temperature, and proper 0–10V dimming—all in a slim, sealed package that fits a standard drop ceiling. I installed a four-pack across two rooms to see how they’d hold up in day-to-day use.

Design and build

Each panel is a 24 × 24 inch, ultra-thin fixture (about 1.18 inches thick) with a low-profile frame and a sealed back. The sealed housing is a small but meaningful upgrade if you’ve ever dealt with dusty lenses and the occasional bug making a museum exhibit out of your ceiling. The finish is clean and consistent, and the diffuser does a good job hiding individual LED points, producing uniform light across the surface.

The panels are lightweight, which is great for handling overhead, but that also means you should treat the edges with care—the frames can pick up a ding if a corner meets a hard surface. One of my panels arrived with a slight corner dent that didn’t affect function or appearance once seated in the grid. Still, it’s a reminder to check boxes on arrival and handle the panels by their broad sides rather than the corners.

The driver is integrated and labeled clearly. Wattage and CCT (correlated color temperature) selections use small DIP switches, which are simple to set before installation.

Installation experience

I used these primarily as recessed drop-in fixtures, where they shine. They drop neatly into a standard 2x2 ceiling grid, sit flat, and don’t rattle. Suspension or surface mounting is supported, but you’ll need accessory kits that aren’t included. If you plan a surface mount, factor that cost and lead time in.

Wiring is straightforward: line and neutral for power, plus purple/gray leads for 0–10V dimming. If you’re not using dimming, cap the control leads per code and the panels will run at the selected wattage. If you are using dimming, remember that 0–10V is a low-voltage control run—it’s not the same as a typical residential triac dimmer. Plan for the additional control wire and a compatible 0–10V wall control or building system.

A couple of practical tips from my install:
- Set the wattage and CCT switches before the panel goes in the ceiling. Saves a trip up the ladder.
- Use safety tie-wires in jurisdictions that require them. The light is light, but it’s still a ceiling fixture above people’s heads.
- If you’re replacing a fluorescent troffer, check your existing circuit load and spacing. At 40W these panels are very bright; you may prefer 30W or 35W in smaller rooms.

Each fixture took about 10–15 minutes including setup and wiring. The slim profile helped in a tight plenum with existing ductwork.

Light quality and output

The combination of a high-efficacy driver and an even diffuser makes for bright, uniform illumination. At 40W, the panel is spec’d at 6000 lumens (150 lm/W), and the perceived brightness matches expectations—this is a serious amount of light for a 2x2, and the beam is pleasingly even across the surface.

Color quality lands at CRI 85+, which is perfectly acceptable for offices, classrooms, and utility spaces. It’s not intended for color-critical work, but for reading, screens, and general tasks, it looks natural and consistent.

CCT is selectable among three settings: 3500K (warm-neutral), 4000K (neutral), and 5000K (cool). I ended up with 4000K in the conference space and 5000K in the open work area. The color consistency across panels was good, with no odd green or magenta shifts, and the diffuser kept glare down in seated positions.

I checked for flicker with a phone slow-motion test and saw no visible stroboscopic effect. The panels are quiet—no buzz on full power or while dimmed.

Controls and adjustability

Two adjustability features matter here:
- Wattage select: 30/35/40W. This is effectively a brightness selector at the fixture. It’s ideal if you want to standardize on one model but tune output room-by-room.
- CCT select: 3500K/4000K/5000K. Useful for matching adjacent spaces or moving toward cooler tones in high-focus areas.

With a 0–10V control, dimming is smooth and stable down to low levels. In a conference room I paired them with a 0–10V wall control and had reliable, flicker-free dimming for presentations. If you’re used to triac dimmers, note again that those are not compatible; you’ll want a proper 0–10V dimmer or an automation system with a 0–10V output.

My only wish: an external access hatch for the switches would make post-install adjustments easier. As it is, plan those decisions during install.

Energy use and cost

Efficiency is a highlight. At 150 lm/W, these panels deliver a lot of light per watt. In my case, I replaced 2x2 fluorescent troffers with four U-bend lamps per fixture (around 70–80W including ballast). Swapping to the OKQ panels at 35W cut each location’s draw roughly in half while improving light distribution and quality.

For an office on 10–12 hours per day, that kind of savings adds up quickly. The ETL and DLC listings are important if you’re chasing utility rebates—DLC qualification in particular is often required for commercial incentives.

The rated life is 50,000 hours. That’s not unusual for quality LED panels, but it’s still meaningful: at 10 hours a day, five days a week, you’re looking at many years before lumen depreciation or driver fatigue become talking points.

Where they work best

  • Offices and classrooms: Uniform illumination, good glare control, and quiet operation.
  • Healthcare and retail back-of-house: Sealed housing keeps dust out; easy wipe-down maintenance.
  • Renovations: The slim profile fits where deeper troffers conflict with ducting.
  • Controls-driven spaces: 0–10V plays well with common commercial dimming and sensor systems.

Gaps and gotchas

  • Not for triac dimmers: These are 0–10V dimmable only. If your space is wired for standard wall dimmers, plan a control upgrade.
  • Accessories not included: Surface and suspension kits are extra. Recessed installs are painless; other mounting types require advance planning.
  • Shipping protection: One of my panels had a minor edge dent on arrival. It disappeared into the grid once installed, but I’d like to see slightly more robust corner protection in the packaging.
  • Bright even at the lowest wattage: At 30W, a single panel can still overwhelm a small room. Rely on dimming or reduce fixture density in compact spaces.

What I’d change

  • External access to the DIP switches would make field adjustments easier.
  • A bundled surface-mount option (even as a separate SKU) would simplify procurement for mixed-ceiling projects.
  • Optional higher-CRI variant for spaces that benefit from richer color rendering.

Verdict

The OKQ 2x2 panels hit the right notes for commercial and institutional upgrades: high efficacy, clean and uniform light, practical adjustability, and proper 0–10V dimming in a thin, sealed package. Installation is straightforward in a drop ceiling, and the selectable wattage/CCT lets you standardize on one model while tailoring each room. Light quality is solid for its class, and the fixtures are quiet and flicker-free.

I would recommend these panels. They offer strong performance per dollar, meaningful energy savings versus older fluorescent troffers, and the safety and rebate-friendly credentials (ETL and DLC) many projects require. Just be sure your dimming plan includes 0–10V controls, order accessory kits if you’re not recessing them, and check shipments promptly so any cosmetic damage can be addressed before install. For offices, schools, and similar spaces, they’re an easy fixture to live with and a sensible path to modernizing a ceiling grid.
