Leviton SureSlide Dimmer Switch for Dimmable LED, Halogen and Incandescent Bulbs, 6674-P0W, White Review
Why I reached for this dimmer
A small bathroom project sent me looking for a reliable, shallow dimmer. I’d swapped in a bright, dimmable LED fixture over the toilet—great in the day, harsh at 2 a.m. The existing switch box turned out to be unusually shallow, with no neutral present. Most dimmers I had on hand, and most on the shelf at home centers, were too deep or required a neutral. The SureSlide dimmer fit where others didn’t, and that’s what got it on my wall.
Installation and setup
The SureSlide dimmer is refreshingly compact—about an inch deep—so it slid into my shallow metal box without the wrestling match I’d braced for. Because it doesn’t need a neutral, it works with older two-wire runs; you’ll connect line, load, and ground. If you’re replacing a standard single-pole switch, the swap is straightforward. In a 3-way setup, you install the SureSlide at one location and use a regular 3‑way mechanical switch at the other. Only one dimmer belongs on the circuit.
A few installation notes from my experience:
- Shut off the breaker and verify power is dead at the switch. The heat sink fins on dimmers are tight quarters to work around.
- If you’re dealing with multiple conductors, compact connectors (e.g., lever-style) help keep the box organized.
- The unit uses a standard Decora opening, so any Decora-style wallplate will do.
Programming the dimming range is where this model earns its keep. Out of the box, the minimum level is conservative—good for eliminating flicker with finicky lamps, but brighter than I like for night use. The SureSlide lets you trim both the bottom and top ends for LED loads. There’s a small slide switch on the face labeled for LED/incandescent and CFL; switching into CFL temporarily lets you set the low end. With the lights on, I flipped into CFL, adjusted the slider to the lowest stable glow, then switched back to LED/incandescent. A quick blink confirmed the setting. After that, the low end on my fixture behaved exactly the way I wanted.
Performance with LEDs and incandescent
With dimmable LEDs, the SureSlide gives smooth, linear control from full brightness down to a whisper of light—assuming you pair it with compatible bulbs. I tested it on a modern LED vanity fixture and a chandelier with A19 LEDs. In both cases, once I set the low trim, there was no visible stepping or jitter. The fixture came on reliably at the selected preset whenever I hit the rocker.
If you mix lamp brands or models on the same circuit, expect the lowest stable level to be determined by the most temperamental bulb. In a mixed-bulb chandelier, I bumped the minimum slightly higher to keep all lamps in sync at the bottom end. When I replaced the mixed set with matching lamps, I could push the low end a few ticks lower without shimmer.
On incandescent loads, as you’d expect from a leading-edge dimmer, the behavior is buttery smooth. The SureSlide is rated for up to 600W incandescent/halogen and 150W LED. For most LED scenarios that’s generous headroom; just keep derating in mind if you gang multiple dimmers in one box (those side fins are there for a reason).
One quirk: at the absolute lowest LED level, I noticed a faint flicker when my variable-speed HVAC blower ramped up. That’s a sign of small line voltage fluctuations rather than the dimmer itself. Raising the minimum a hair eliminated it.
Ergonomics and day-to-day use
The control layout is simple: a discrete rocker switch for on/off and a linear slide for level. I prefer this style over sliders that double as on/off—your light comes back exactly where you left it, and you can quickly cut power with a single, positive click. The slider has the right amount of resistance and is easy to nudge with a thumb as you pass.
The rocker isn’t as large or as easy to “find” by feel as a full-size paddle, which is worth noting if you like the big-target ergonomics of a paddle switch. That said, in day-to-day use I had no issues and appreciated the clean, low-profile face. There’s no status LED, which I personally prefer in bedrooms and baths where a tiny glow can be distracting.
Build quality is good for residential duty. The yoke is sturdy, the action feels precise, and it doesn’t transmit any audible hum in my installations.
CFL mode and “future-proofing”
LEDs have mostly displaced dimmable CFLs, but if you still encounter them, the dedicated CFL mode matters. It slightly bumps the starting voltage to coax certain CFL ballasts to strike at lower levels. I tested a dimmable spiral CFL for curiosity’s sake, and the CFL mode did help it start more consistently at the bottom end. If you’re all-LED, leave it in LED/incandescent mode.
3-way use and wiring caveats
The SureSlide works perfectly in a 3‑way circuit with a standard 3‑way switch at the second location. Just don’t attempt to put a second dimmer in the other spot; that’s a recipe for poor behavior and potential damage. If your light and ceiling fan share a switch leg, separate them. This dimmer is for lighting loads only—no motors.
Another compatibility note: the SureSlide is a forward-phase (triac) dimmer. That’s ideal for most screw-base LED bulbs and many integrated fixtures. If you’re dimming low-voltage LED systems with electronic drivers that specify an ELV/reverse-phase dimmer, this is not the right match. Always check your fixture’s driver requirements.
Compared with alternatives
In this price range you’ll also find paddle-style dimmers and alternative slider models from other major brands. The SureSlide’s standout advantages are its shallow body, neutral-free operation, and adjustable min/max trim without special tools. If you prefer a large paddle aesthetic or need features like a locator light, you may gravitate to a different style. For compact boxes, though, the SureSlide is hard to beat.
Tips for best results
- Use matching, dimmer-compatible LED bulbs on the same circuit to maximize low-end performance.
- After installation, take 60 seconds to set the minimum trim. It’s the difference between “works” and “works beautifully.”
- If you experience shimmer at the very bottom, raise the minimum one notch or try a more compatible bulb.
- In multi-gang boxes, expect wattage derating; for LED loads this is seldom an issue, but keep it in mind.
- Don’t use this on ceiling fans or outlets. Lighting loads only.
What I like
- Slim profile fits shallow boxes and older homes without neutrals
- Separate on/off rocker preserves your preferred light level
- Excellent low-end control with simple min/max adjustment
- Works reliably with both LED and incandescent loads
- 3‑way capable with a standard switch in the second location
What could be better
- The small rocker isn’t as easy to hit by feel as a full-size paddle
- Not suitable for ELV-only drivers or motor loads
- Mixed-bulb fixtures may require a slightly higher minimum to keep all lamps stable
Recommendation
I recommend the SureSlide dimmer for most residential LED and incandescent lighting where you want dependable, flicker-free control without rewiring for a neutral—and especially if you’re working with a shallow box. Its adjustable trim takes the frustration out of dialing in low-end performance, the separate rocker is practical in daily use, and the compact body makes installation painless. If you need ELV dimming, smart home features, or a big paddle aesthetic, look elsewhere. For straightforward, quiet, and compatible dimming with a small footprint, this one earns a spot in my go-to kit.
